WHY seeks Interior Designer

Founded in 2004 by Kulapat Yantrasast, WHY is a multi-disciplinary design practice dedicated to creating connections between people, culture, and place. Our team is based in Los Angeles and New York City, and the practice is organized as five interdependent workshops: Buildings, Landscape, Museums, Objects, and Ideas. This unique cross-disciplinary structure enables us to work across multiple sectors and combine different forms of expertise, generating progressive solutions for projects ranging from museums to mixed-use developments, community arts centers to private residences. In recent years, WHY has gained a reputation as a thought-leader in the fields of cultural and civic architecture, winning global competitions including the Ross Pavilion and West Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh, Scotland, and taking on major cultural landmark projects such as the Tchaikovsky Academic Opera and Ballet Theater in Perm, Russia.

We are looking for Interior Designers who are passionate about design, think multi-dimensionally and work collaboratively. Specifically, you should be well versed in luxury single family residential design and development from conception through install. You should also be sufficiently experienced to be able to manage a project through all the phases and work independently to develop deliverables specific to interior design, while working collaboratively with our multidiscipline team on the design.  

Required Skills and Credentials:

  • A degree in interior design or interior architecture.
  •  5-10 years professional experience working in a deign practice. Skills and knowledge in designing and executing the interior design, especially luxury residential project and hospitality spaces. Knowledgeable in detailed space planning, ergonomics, and FF&E expectations by program type. Ability to apply that knowledge to execute quality design.  
  • Strong design and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work well with different perspectives. Experience working in a design-intensive, collaborative environment.
  • Strong listener with superior communication skills
  • Experience in all phases of projects, helping to generate and visualize concepts and then developing the design through specification, procurement and installation of FF&E. Basic understanding of codes and industry standards. Experience in coordinating consultant work.
  • Experience working with clients and leading collaborative discussions. Strong presenter.
  • Strong working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, AutoCAD, Rhino & Vray. Ability to develop quality presentation materials.

Additional Skills/Credentials that will be considered a plus

  • Experience in project management.
  • Experience in designing and procuring custom furnishings.
  • Experience in business development, strong vendor relationships

 Working knowledge of Revit, Enscape, Lumion.  The position may be salaried with benefits OR on a contract basis. We are open to candidates that are able to work in either the Los Angeles or New York office, but the position will require presence at one of our locations in alignment with our reopening phases.
