We strive to create high quality design that balances conceptual with functional concerns.  With a focus on ideas and process, our designs evolve as unique adaptations to existing constraints that prioritize flexibility in the architectural outcome. The work spans multiple disciplines including interiors, landscape, construction, and real estate development. Our work is a mix of programs, scales and construction types that includes new construction of multi-family buildings and single-family dwellings as well as commercial and residential adaptive reuse, office tenant improvements, and retail. Our clients are primarily developers, but also include home and business owners.  We occasionally act as real estate developer, either for a fee or in our own development projects. This gives us a unique perspective on client perspective, which helps us create the best projects possible given all constraints.

The Position

We seek a balanced individual that has worked with a range of project types with an emphasis on multi-family residential work. 7 to 10 years of experience with a degree from an accredited university is required. Experience with modular projects is a plus. Positive and open yet constructive communication is paramount. Attention to detail is imperative.  A good fit with Baran Studio culture is also essential to success for both the individual and the studio. You should value hard work, determination, and a high standard of quality mixed with an amount of light-heartedness and levity. Also note that as a small studio you will wear many hats and it will be necessary understand many aspects of the practice as well as the projects themselves.

Requirements:

  • Degree in Architecture from an accredited university
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of experience.
  • Strong leadership skills and experience, including interpersonal and written communication skills, and the ability to delegate and guide junior staff.
  • Advanced design talent, problem solving, and technical skills, including knowledge of construction types and technical detailing.
  • Ability to assemble entitlement, building permit, bid, and construction document sets conforming to agency requirements and office standards for basic formatting and necessary contents.
  • Substantial project management experience including obtaining agency approval, building code compliance, and construction administration.
  • Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to effectively plan and manage complicated schedules, budgets, and resources.
  • Experience running project teams and maintain positive relationships, including communicating and coordinating with staff, consultants, contractors, city officials, and neighborhood groups.
  • Experience with municipal zoning codes and knowledge of California Building Codes.
  • Revit, Sketchup, and Adobe knowledge preferred but not required
  • We encourage licensed or licensure-track applicants.

Responsibilities:

●     Work with principal, staff, and clients to develop design concepts

●     Work with principal, staff, clients, and agencies to develop design solutions that meet all state and local requirements

●     Assemble drawings and drawing sets required for client sign-off, community outreach, public hearings, and agency approvals

●     Assemble drawings and drawing sets required for construction, minimizing the need for RFIs and Change Orders

●     Work with principal, clients, and agencies to facilitate and expedite agency approvals

●     Efficiently and effectively manage clients, agency staff, project stakeholders, consultants, contractors, junior staff as well as other managers and principal

●     Maintain project schedule and efficiency

●     Manage project budgets and ensure profitability

●     Efficiently and effectively manage construction administration

●     Assist in decision making with regard to studio operations to ensure studio quality
