About this role:

A well established award-winning international firm is looking for a Sustainability Specialist to join their team.  This individual will be focused on developing and continually improving the sustainable design and operations policy, standards, implementation and research of the firm. This role will entail a great deal of involvement in all phases of multiple projects across their international offices, from early concepts, setting goals and design strategy, through construction and follow-through on implementation of key ideas, use of materials, etc.

Key responsibilities:

  • Help crystallize the firm’s wide policy on sustainability, recognizing the international nature and breadth of their work.
  • Define a set of standards for application on all projects throughout the firm.
  • Lead training effort to distribute tools and expertise within the design teams, throughout the studio.
  • Organize internal speakers for staff.
  • Work with design teams to ensure baseline (minimum) firm-wide goals are being addressed.
  • Work with greater involvement on key projects that are aspirational in terms of innovation and environmental design response (6-8 projects per year with this level of continuous involvement throughout all stages of the work - concept through construction).
  • Facilitate the correct use of tools on projects throughout the office, on all project teams.
  • Coordinate research activities with university research efforts, and strengthen the firm ties to leading edge research.
  • Promote and coordinate sustainability & ecology related research in all of our locations.
  • Stay well-versed on national and international environmental legislation and accords, and what they mean for the built environment.
  • Proactively assist and advise design teams in establishing progressive sustainable design goals for their projects. 
  • Contribute to the firm’s broader knowledge base, influence and thought leadership through attending major sustainable design conferences, wherever possible presenting case studies and contributing to invited panel events.
  • Promote the practice and its design /operations ethos to a wider audience at conferences and speaking engagements. 
  • Assist the marketing team with awards submissions and develop appropriate materials that represent the firm’s commitment to the environment.
  • Assist in new business pursuits, (including proposals, presentations, competitions) with an environmental focus.

 Skills and Experience:

  • Undergraduate degree in a design or engineering related field.
  • Anywhere between 3-7 years of experience of working in either an advisory or client-side role in the built environment industry.
  • Proven track record of personal commitment to sustainability.
  • Accredited Professional according to at least one if not several existing sustainability certification schemes for buildings such as LEED, BREEAM or WELL.
  • Candidates must have Rhino and Grasshopper proficiency.  Revit fluency is a major plus.
  • Previous experience with role specific tools such as Ladybug and Honeybee.
  • Leadership attributes with an ability to influence and challenge peers and more senior colleagues where necessary.
