General Information

Dean Sakamoto Architects/SHADE is seeking candidates for its Honolulu office for fulltime employment or on a contract basis. In-residence/in-person working is our preference, but virtual consulting is possible. DSA/SHADE is a full-service private practice and public interest design foundation. Dean Sakamoto Architects (DSA) was founded in 1999 and is known for its culturally specific, environmentally concerned design solutions in the Northeast U.S. and Hawai‘i. SHADE, which stands for Sustainable Humanitarian Architecture and Design for the Earth, is a mission-based collaborative practice with a focus and network in the rapidly urbanizing tropical and subtropical Asia-Pacific region. SHADE Institute, a non-profit subsidiary of SHADE, provides low-cost public interest planning and design services through its training and mentorship program.

Project Architect Job Profile

DSA/SHADE is seeking individuals with a minimum of 5 years of professional working experience since completion of a professional degree in architecture (M.Arch. or B.Arch. is mandatory). Professional licensure is expected, however, State of Hawai‘i registration is not required. Primary responsibilities include: project execution and management; implement drawings and specifications; supervision of project designers and assistants. Secondary responsibility includes advancing of project delivery tools and systems. Leadership capability a must; ability to be creative yet meet budgets and schedules; and possess a design sensibility which is compatible with the firm. Proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD, Adobe Suite software and Excel is required. Excellent verbal, written communication skills along with energetic, assertive and proactive personality traits are desired. Candidates who demonstrate successful prior project outcomes of design excellence in the application materials will received priority consideration. Compensation will be based on experience and may be adjusted according to performance (post-hire period).

Project Types & Phases of Work

Past experience and/or interest in project types which include custom single family residential; affordable multi-family housing; K-12 school and university; and mixed-use commercial projects in historic settings is ideal. Hands-on experience in all phases of architectural services from Preliminary Design to Construction Administration is preferred. Experience and/or interest in applying sustainable and humanitarian-design certification programs such as LEED, Living Building Challenge, SEED, and etc. is ideal.
