The Making Complex at Woodbury University, Burbank Campus is a multi-disciplinary facility, offering the campus community an educational and service based destination where students, staff and faculty from across all departments, can gather to collaborate, innovate and prototype creative ideas in a myriad of hands-on learning spaces. This state of the art facility offers access to a multitude of resources, from traditional wood and metal working machines to advanced digital prototyping technologies. The Making Complex is comprised of the following workspaces and project areas:

  • Wood Shop
  • Metal Shop (welding, cutting, rolling, bending, machining, etc.)
  • Digital Lab (laser cutting, 3D printing, CNC routing, CNC milling, Vacuum Forming, etc.)
  • Robotics Lab (Heavy Payload Robotic Arm Work Cell)
  • Ceramics and Casting Yard (ceramics firing, glass firing, slip casting, etc.)
  • Material Design Lab (digital knitting, sewing and embroidery, fabric dying, etc.)
  • Lighting Lab
  • Virtual Reality Lab

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Robotics / Prototype Specialist is expected to advise university administration on opportunities for integrating facility offerings into the curriculum; train students, staff, and faculty through hands-on demonstrations and technical workshops; as well as, consult, coordinate and aid in the use of facility automation technologies on design and research projects.

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Support application of computer science/information technology including robotics and prototyping to architecture and design.
  • Delivering effective orientations and technique demonstrations to all students, staff and faculty who wish to use the Robotics Lab .
  • Install, program or repair programmable controllers, robot controllers, end-of-arm tools, or conveyors. Program robotic equipment. Maintain electromechanical equipment.
    • Troubleshoot Robotics System
    • Testing performance of robotics assemblies
    • Test performance of electrical, mechanical for integrated systems or equipment
  • Work with Making Complex Manager on updating student technician training manual and facility use protocol – updating robotics guidelines.
  • Maintain service records of robotic equipment or automated production systems
  • Engage in recruitment and development activities, including facility tours and demonstrations
  • Help grow the design thinking and maker culture in the university community
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum Bachelor's Degree in Architecture, Information Technology or related field (e.g., Art, Architecture, Industrial Design, Engineering, etc.).
  • Minimum of (2) years of experience working with 6+ axis CNC and advanced prototyping technologies in a creative or educational setting
  • Basic proficiency in the use of relevant software and hardware.
  • Basic proficiency in the use of digital fabrication equipment including laser cutters, 3d printers, CNC routers, CNC mills, etc.
  • Familiarity with fabrication facility safety best practices
  • Experience training or teaching others
  • Strong organizational skills

PREFERRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience teaching in an academic setting
  • 5 or more years of relevant professional experience
  • Advanced knowledge of robotics in machining, material handling and motion control
  • Proficiency in robotic arm calibration, EOAT customization, and off-line simulation (e.g. RoboDK)
  • Knowledge of virtual reality platforms and software (e.g., Unity, Unreal Engine, etc.)
  • Familiarity with electronic prototyping technologies
  • Familiarity with other advanced manufacturing technologies
  • Supervisory experience
  • Demonstrated aptitude for creative problem-solving
  • Familiarity OSHA regulations
  • Demonstrated aptitude for creative problem-solving

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
