Taubman College of Architecture + Urban Planning has a diverse portfolio of sponsored research and creative practice (R+CP) work that is highly collaborative with ambitions for real-world application. Our R+CP projects span a wide spectrum from building technology, digital fabrication, advanced robotics, material systems, transportation planning, urban systems, historical research, spatial justice, engaged social innovation with community partners, and artistic production and exhibition. Although a small unit at the university, annual research expenditures have doubled in the past four years to approximately $3million. Roughly 40 new external proposals are submitted each year, with a similar volume of internal proposals to cross-campus initiatives. The funding comes from a wide range of sources, including non-profit foundations, industry partners, and federal agencies such as the USDOT, NSF, NIH and DOE. Our projects often require creative and entrepreneurial approaches to funding as we work to continue to expand and increase the impact of this portfolio.

The Office of Research and Creative Practice’s mission is to foster research collaboration, facilitate project ideation, support faculty research development, enhance faculty competitiveness in securing external funding, and implement policies for research integrity and compliance.

The director of research and creative practice development reports to the associate dean for research and creative practice, and will be an important contributor in strategically guiding the college’s efforts in R+CP development. The diversity of faculty projects means that the director’s portfolio will be varied and broad, requiring agility to work at both the visionary and detail levels. As director, you will oversee the research development activities within the college: supporting new research initiatives, assisting in developing new research opportunities and strategic partnerships, and working directly with faculty, staff, and external partners to build capacity and administer the R+CP enterprise. You will also be responsible for the project management and daily administration of the college’s large-scale, multi-domain, multi-stakeholder projects with strict deadlines, occurring within national and international contexts. The ideal candidate possesses knowledge aligned architecture and urban planning and is a collaborative and proactive strategic thinker with an entrepreneurial mindset.
