Shannon Leigh Associates (SLA) is a thriving 10-year old Experiential/Environmental Graphic Design Studio with headquarters in San Leandro, CA (SF East Bay) and an additional Studio in Sacramento, CA.  SLA is quickly becoming an industry leader as we expand our services onto a national stage. We have an immediate need for a dynamic entrepreneurial senior level Studio Director to manage and lead our wayfinding design teams. The wayfinding experience is changing rapidly.  We seek your innovative experiential experience to assure project outcomes that improve the lives of our clients and their customers in both the built and digital environments. 

The Studio Director will oversee the coordination and management of the design teams’ day to day activities, develop the project teams to heighten our existing design and implementation, and launch our digital wayfinding design practice. The Studio Director will ideally become a key contributor in shaping the future of SLA for the next decade. A successful Studio Director will be in line for one of the firm’s upper management /equity ownership positions. 

The Studio Director position is envisioned as being based in the San Leandro Studio with travel to the Sacramento Studio once a week or more as needed. The San Leandro office is conveniently located two blocks from the San Leandro BART station in an artfully renovated former manufacturing space near a convenient and pedestrian friendly downtown. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage and supervise all design teams
  • Conduct design team employee annual goal setting and compensation reviews
  • Provide training and promote professional development activities
  • Enhance communication between project and design teams with the goal of more efficient allocation of design team resources and more satisfying outcomes for all design team members
  • Convert the studio into a 3D Revit/CAD and digital environment, providing employee training programs and leadership
  • Increase efficiencies to achieve billable goals, enhance profitability and increase employee satisfaction


  • Excellent communication, presentation, verbal, written and people skills
  • Budgeting expertise and resource management

  • Ability to set expectations, guide, validate and inspire design possibilities
  • Entrepreneurial attitude, quality minded and responsive to client requests
  • Innovative design experience
  • Efficient problem solving
  • Experience with building collaboration and consensus between multiple teams
  • Experience managing large multi-phase projects


  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required in wayfinding, architecture, or a related design field;
  • Minimum of 5-7 years’ experience managing multiple direct report employees;
  • 5 years minimum experience in wayfinding, environmental branding, architectural signage, design or architecture, construction management;
  • Software skills in the following programs: Adobe Suite, primarily Abobe Illustrator; InDesign; Sketchup; all Google products, survey database software. Understanding of Revit and/or CAD;
  • Digital wayfinding experience a plus;
