Position Responsibilities

  • Develop a team of sustainable professionals that will collaborate with design studios to create new architecture informed by sustainability and SOM’s long-standing excellence in interdisciplinary design.
  • Provide essential research, report writing and presentations on a variety of High Performance Design topics.
  • Serve as a sustainability champion within the office, firm and project team.
  • Represent SOM within the industry and externally as a thought leader.
  • Collaborate with contractors, cost estimators and others to ensure specified strategies are cost effective from an early stage and add to the internal database of cost metrics.
  • Review documents for all compliance with approved program requirements of the client.
  • Confer with clients, consultants, contractors, and others during various stages of project development.
  • Coordinate work on assigned projects, with architectural team and other disciplines.
  • Perform a variety of technical analyses on energy, daylighting, façade performance, thermal comfort, renewables, carbon, and water.

Leadership Responsibilities

  • Inspires and leads others by example, participates in staff mentoring and training, clearly defines team member expectations and responsibilities, empowers others, and delegates where appropriate based on team members’ recognized abilities and potential.
  • Develops and/or manages, in collaboration with team members, a clear and consistent work plan to achieve the project budget, deliverables, and schedule.
  • Actively engages in internal and external professional development opportunities.
  • Contributes to the implementation of sustainable strategies in all project assignments and the associated development of staff knowledge.
  • Contributes to the development of standards, policies, and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, environmental design, or other technical field that allows engineering licensure. Alternatively, an architecture license with demonstrated knowledge of engineering and building physics.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Licensed in state of practice.
  • LEED Accreditation.
  • 7+ years of experience performing independent research on state-of-the-art technologies, environmentally preferred alternative materials and integrated design strategies for high performance design, from conception through construction to operation.
  • Demonstrated basic knowledge of heat transfer and HVAC design.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of sustainability rating systems, life cycle and carbon footprint assessment, energy modeling, shading and daylighting analysis, and overall sustainable design strategies and analysis methods.
  • WELL Accredited Professional preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience with building Energy simulation tools such as Energy Plus, IES, daylighting simulation tools such as Radiance, Diva and computational fluid dynamic software programs is preferred.
