SOM seeks Airport Architects with 5-10+ years' experience to serve in various roles: design, technical, and planning. The following responsibilities are qualifications represent the minimum expectations of the position.


  • Creates and innovates with a strong conceptual design ability and integrates interdisciplinary criteria to effectively move forward the design of distinct portions of large projects or entire projects of a small scale.
  • Demonstrates an advanced understanding of building materials, systems, specifications, codes, details and construction techniques. Is able to enrich design concepts through technical strategies and effectively uses appropriate tools to design and document at all project phases.
  • Manages time and workload of own work efforts and those of others to meet project task deadlines and commitments, with occasional interaction and direction from team leaders while guiding and teaching less experienced staff.
  • Demonstrates advanced knowledge of interpreting quantitative airport and terminal planning information, generating alternative terminal layout typologies, arranging terminal processor and support facilities into coherent and efficient configurations
  • Demonstrates understanding of physical characteristics of common commercial aircraft and ability to generate at a concept level airside layouts. 
  • Demonstrates thorough understanding of MEP systems as they apply to airport terminals, also special systems, including baggage handling systems and gate equipment. 
  • Demonstrates understanding of terminal landside facilities (curbs, parking, and bus and rail access) and be able to generate comprehensive layouts at a concept level. 
  • Coordinates within a larger architecture and consultant team to develop the plans and spatial design from concept through CDs
  • Realizes the design intent and ensures the highest quality of detailing are primary expectations


  • Experienced in developing airport terminal layouts of varying scales, including all processing, public, support, operational and non-public functions.
  • Experienced in developing the documentation for airport terminals and associated landside and airside facilities
  • Experienced in leading and managing internal teams of architects, as well as multiple specialty sub-consultants
  • Experienced in developing documentation for all phases of design and delivery, including construction administration and Quality Management. 
  • Exhibits initiative, process innovation, problem solving, and decision quality with a high attention to precision and accuracy at a project level.
  • Actively collaborates at a project, consultant team, and client team level by critically and constructively evaluating ideas. Contributes to and actively participates within the studio and office.
  • Effectively communicates internally with project teams and externally with consultants and clients through timely and appropriate written, oral, and visual means.
  • Inspires and leads others by example, participates in staff mentoring and training, clearly defines team member expectations and responsibilities, empowers others, and delegates where appropriate based on team members’ recognized abilities and potential.
  • 5 – 10+ years of professional experience, professional licensure process is close to completion.
  • Completion of a professional degree in Architecture or a related field.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD, Rhino, parametric and rendering software, and other graphic software.
  • LEED certification preferred.
