What You Do:

As an Associate Research Manager, you will support and contribute to multiple initiatives related to the built environment and the AEC industry. You have the ability to transition adeptly between a wide variety of topics that you may not be an expert in, ranging from architectural design to energy systems to software architecture. No matter what the subject, you can rapidly uncover key opportunities and obstacles to innovation. You have the ability to determine long- and short-range research priorities and pathways even when operating in ambiguous and shifting contexts. You thrive in interdisciplinary teams and are able to differentiate and prioritize between varied viewpoints and stakeholders.

You will support in establishing overall workstreams and deliverables for a range of research initiatives, and you should also feel comfortable taking ownership of workstreams as part of broader initiatives. You will assist in overseeing a complex network of consultants; this may include onboarding, providing guidance on scope and work plans, conducting regular check-ins, and reviewing deliverables. You are hungry for knowledge and are ready to roll up your sleeves and dive into content. You will also be central to the organizational management of initiatives, including creating and maintaining file structures, reviewing consultant invoices, and tracking intermediate tasks and deadlines.


  • Assist in facilitating and coordinating meetings between stakeholders and consultants. Document decisions, action items, and red flags. Provide recommendations on direction and decisions to initiative leads.

  • Assist in developing research plans under the guidance of initiative leads.

  • Perform market research and assessment of potential consultants and technologies to add value to projects and the lab.

  • Serve as the main point of contact on shorter-term deliverables, including managing construction of prototypes, developing presentation materials, and coordinating workshops.

  • Develop analytical frameworks and reports that expedite the decision-making ability of design and fabrication teams.

  • Have an open and flexible attitude toward developing alternate solutions and methods to enhance or supplant industry norms.

  • Embody the ethos and expands the ambitions of the R+D Lab.


  • Background in engineering (e.g., civil, electrical, mechanical, environmental), architecture or urban planning.

  • Experience in project or construction management, applied research, innovation programs, or technology commercialization programs.

  • Thrives in ambiguity. Ability to deliver on goals that will shift and morph over time. Ability to work towards long term ambitions in addition to short term deliverables.

  • Ability to quickly understand principles, pain points, and industry relevancy of complex, technical content.

  • Ability to lead and navigate multi-disciplinary teams on high-stakes projects.

  • Excellent planning skills, including careful attention to detail, information organization and timeline tracking; ability to utilize data to tell a story 

  • Tools for understand potential exposures/roadblocks and strategies to overcome them.

  • Ability to foresee challenges, identify red flags, and develop and implement mitigation strategies.

  • Ability to rapidly assess risk, make decisions, and rough-out action plans.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively across many teams and at all organizational levels.

  • Strong communication skills in written, verbal, and graphical form.

  • Solution-Seeking and action-oriented.

  • Relentless curiosity and a passion for the built environment.

  • An obsession with user-centered discovery and design.

This position is full time at the R+D lab located on premises of a large tech company in Mountain View, CA, with full-time employment through XL Construction.
