We have an opportunity for an Architect / Urban Designer to support our San Francisco office.

Working with us, you will:

  • Be actively involved in architecture, urban design and planning including civic, mixed use, transit-oriented, open space, community engagement, and campus planning projects.
  • Utilize practical architectural and urban design skills, including programming, analysis, conceptual design, site planning, building typology & massing studies, space planning and detailed design at a range of scales.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of architecture, planning, landscape, engineering, civil, and design professionals from SmithGroup offices across the country to produce creative and innovative projects.
  • Manage diverse teams of professionals to complete urban design and master planning projects, coordinating the overall work, schedule, deliverables, and budget.
  • Organize and lead team meetings involving consultants and/or clients; present findings and recommendations to client representatives and/or design review committees
  • Engage with Marketing, Business Development and other disciplines to effectively market our services, including involvement in the preparation of qualification and proposal packages, interview materials and technical proposals.
  • Assist in fostering relationships with both current and prospective clients.
  • Demonstrate the ability to assist teams in profitably delivering design excellence and client satisfaction.
  • Assist with writing master plan reports, technical reports, and articles for professional publication.
  • Make presentations of planning and design ideas to clients, community groups, and professional organizations.

An ideal candidate has:

  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree in Architecture plus an additional certificate or degree in Urban Design or Planning is strongly preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience working in architecture, urban design and planning.
  • Experience in leading or managing project teams.
  • AICP Certification, LEED AP is preferred but not required.
  • Excellent skills in urban design and master planning and the ability to work on projects of both an urban design and architectural scale.
  • Excellent knowledge of, and familiarity with the use of graphic programs such as SketchUp, Rhino, Adobe Creative Cloud Suite, Microsoft Office Suite, GIS and AutoCAD. Knowledge of Revit is helpful.
  • Strong written communication skills including experience authoring project summaries and design guidelines.
  • Exceptional graphic communication abilities in 2D & 3D digital visualization and an ability to communicate with hand-sketching.
  • Excellent analytical and quantitative skills Strong verbal communication abilities

We offer 3 weeks of paid time off within the first year of employment, with the option of purchasing additional time off, and pay for 8 federal holidays. We also offer an alternative work schedule that provides employees with an additional 15 days off per year (usually Fridays) to help with work/life balance.
