Design Fellowship Opportunity

The Call:

SHADE group LLC, a Honolulu-based collaborative environmental design practice and public interest institute, is immediately seeking top applicants in fields of architecture and urban design to join its team. Advanced students enrolled in university practicum programs, recent graduates of professional degree programs and intern-level professionals (1-4 years of experience) are encouraged to apply. Individuals who hold a pre-professional or a non-professional degree in architecture or environmental design will also be considered.

About SHADE:

SHADE stands for sustainable, humanitarian, architecture and design for the earth. SHADE group’s practice members consist of architectural, landscape architecture and urban planning firms based in Honolulu, U.S. mainland and Singapore. SHADE Institute, is a non-profit public interest design component of SHADE group. The Institute provides community-based planning and design research and services through intern training and mentorship. The Institute is funded by grants from the State of Hawaii, City and County of Honolulu, and numerous private donors and industry partners. In addition to its community-based approach, SHADE is committed to learning from and serving the rapidly urbanizing tropical and sub-tropical regions world-wide.

Terms of Design Fellowship Position:

SHADE will provide a Fellowship stipend based on the selected applicant’s experience and financial need. The Fellowship stipend period is for a minimum of 10 weeks (subject to extension) and may be transitioned to full-time salary with benefits if project funding and the Fellow’s interest/performance is positive. Fellows will initially report to SHADE office and may be placed in at another Honolulu member firm’s office. Applicants will may be eligible for one-way travel to Hawaii and temporary housing through the Fellowship period pending available funding.

Minimum Requirements:

Individuals who are currently enrolled with advanced standing in a practicum and/or recently graduated from an accredited professional university graduate or undergraduate program. Preference will be given to those who demonstrate design excellence, have leadership potential and are interested in living and working in hot-humid and hot-arid environments. Prior professional experience is preferred.
