About Common

Common is the nation’s leading residential brand offering convenience and community through coliving and traditional apartments. Our signature approach to end-to-end property management and technology offerings allows us to deliver unparalleled experiences across 27 buildings, 6 cities, and over 800 members. Common is the preferred choice for both residents looking for a stress-free and all-inclusive living environment, and for real estate owners seeking reliable, above-market returns. Launched in October 2015, we now operate homes in New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Oakland, Seattle, and Washington, D.C. and receive over 3,000 new member applications per week.

It’s an exciting time to be part of Common’s team. We challenge ourselves every day not just to think about ways to make city living better, but to activate on those ideas in meaningful ways. Our team is comprised of real estate professionals, designers, engineers, salespeople, marketers, client service representatives, and so much more. We work collaboratively, value self-startership, and embrace a “whatever it takes” mentality to ensure our work is done and done well.

Common was founded by General Assembly co-founder Brad Hargreaves and has raised over $65MM in venture funding.
About the Role

Common is seeking a Senior Architectural Designer to join our Design and Construction Team, Common Studio.  We are looking for an energetic individual who can navigate the balance between both the qualitative and quantitative; the creative and practical.  This is an opportunity for a talented thought leader to help conceptualize and execute better housing across multiple cities at a large scale. This role will report to the Director of Architecture.

  • Provide oversight and Project Management support of a high-volume (and growing) portfolio.
  • As this role is client-facing, you will be directly involved in leading conversations and making presentations to Real Estate Developers, Equity Partners, or other stakeholders.  You will become a representative of Common and excellent presentation skills and salesmanship is required.
  • Manage and mentor a rapidly growing team of Architectural designers.
  • Work closely with internal Real Estate team to design and analyze homes in our pipeline.  This includes conducting testfits and feasibility studies in parallel with a financial pro forma across a wide array of housing typologies.
  • Since Common is not the AOR for our homes, you will collaborate with our partners’ architects as a coliving expert through advisory and review. This includes schematic programming, layouts, coordination with local architects, drawing review, writing specifications, FF&E design, and construction administration.  Unlike the experience one would get in a traditional firm, the job will not include production of drawing sets or formal exploration.
  • In addition to project-specific design, we are constantly refining and challenging our model for shared living.  You will be actively engaged in research and design initiatives with other teams at Common. You will be verbally and visually communicating ideas through diagramming and illustrations to fold architectural thinking into our process.
  • As Common is currently in 7 cities, there will be travel to project sites as necessary.

This is an excellent opportunity to join an exciting start up at an early stage, as your work will have a meaningful and significant impact on both the member experience and the formation of future processes at Common.  The ideal candidate is someone looking for a less traditional career path, and instead act as a hybrid between a real estate developer, a conceptual housing investigator, and an architect.

  • Master’s Degree in Architecture required
  • 7+ Years of experience in an architecture/design firm required.
  • Professional experience in multi-family residential design required.
  • In-depth knowledge of US city approval processes and codes, primarily in multi-family residential.  Includes Zoning, Accessibility, Building Codes, State Dwelling Laws, etc.
  • As this role is client-facing, excellent salesmanship is required.
  • Strong eye for both interior design and facades required.
  • Proficiency in Rhino, Autocad, Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign required
  • Candidate must be data-oriented and comfortable supporting ideas with both qualitative and analytical reasoning
  • Candidate must be very organized and be able to multitask across large number of projects with various deadlines
  • Candidate must be a continuous learner who enjoys researching, testing and implementing best practices
  • Candidate must be a direct and proactive communicator who can be independent but ask questions and ask for help when needed
