Smith Maran Architecture + Interiors seeks a Senior Interior Designer to join our Montclair, NJ office.  We are looking for a smart, highly organized and design-savvy professional to help develop and guide our corporate, residential and hospitality interiors in NYC and the tri-state area.  As a member of a small firm, you will be asked to apply your creativity and diligence to all phases of design and construction.  If you know us, you know we and our clients prize someone who speaks, writes and listens well.  If you don’t know us, our office is in the cultural heart of NJ and we serve a broad range of clients with unique design challenges and high expectations.  

Your Role

  • Conceptualize, visualize and articulate clear, thoughtful and inspired interior design solutions in verbal, digital and physical formats.
  • Develop material and finish solutions that realize established project goals.
  • Create and communicate clear and attainable project objectives to project team members.
  • Support and guide project team(s) including interior designers, architects, graphic designers, and engineering consultants.
  • Report to firm Principal.
  • Sustain positive and productive client contact for the lifecycle of a project.
  • Work in all phases of a project, from attending interviews and assisting with proposals to developing design and managing CD’s, consultants, bidding and CA. 
  • Coordinate project scheduling, meetings, budgets, vendors and contractors.
  • Interior Design, BArch and/or MArch degree from an accredited university.
  • Min. 8 years of experience in an interior design or architecture firm.
  • Min. 6 years on corporate/commercial interiors.
  • Min. 6 years working on projects in NYC.
  • Min. 4 years on residential projects.
  • Able to complete tasks for multiple projects at a time.
  • Experience to include:
    • Proven ability to conceptualize, visualize and realize design ideas and objectives for large and small scale projects
    • Sourcing and specifying all FFE elements, coordinating with reps as needed
    • Participating in entire project lifecycle, from interview to post-occupancy;
    • Interviewing and participation in proposal writing
    • Leading and mentoring project teams
    • Strong communication and relationship management skills to maintain existing client relationships and to build new ones
    • Fiscal awareness and accountability for project time and fees
    • Knowledge of and ability to research and interpret codes, requirements, and best practices for materials and furnishings
    • Preparing construction documents, schedules and specifications
    • Custom detailing
    • Construction administration.
  • Fluent in Autocad, InDesign, Excel.
  • Fluency or familiarity with Photoshop and SketchUp.
  • NCIDQ or Licensed Architect a significant plus.
  • LEED Accreditation a plus.

    • Have experience with and interest in both the big and small, from concept to close-out.
