FIX Cottages is hiring!

FIX Cottages is a new mission-based and venture-backed design company that creates a turn-key solution for housing using the backyard cottage.  We finance, design, and build cottages for homeowners throughout the region, beginning with Seattle.  Our mission is to increase housing affordability and create location security for thousands while cultivating closer community ties and reducing displacement as our region grows.  We are a human-centered design studio and believe our business will succeed because of the quality of our designs and customer service.  Our designs will cover a range of styles and lifestyles.  We will build our first cottages in early 2020 and are now hiring a lead architect to join our team in creating our design portfolio.  FIX Cottages (temporary name) is an incubation of FIX Impact Development, an innovation and design company that uses design thinking to solve complex urban issues with place-based solutions.

  • You enjoy the entire discipline, from design and permitting to construction and fabrication
  • You’re at a revolutionary construction start-up but aren't sure you're actually revolutionizing anything
  • You are at a high-end design firm, less than inspired by the mission or impact of your work

Your Qualifications & Experience

  • 5-7 years’ experience in single-family design, working across all project phases from feasibility through construction administration
  • Intimate knowledge of Seattle’s residential land use, building code, and permitting process
  • Excellent residential detailing, CD preparation, and specifications across all areas of the set
  • Excited by human-centered design and working across architectural styles
  • Expert at Revit, AutoCAD, 3D modelling, and Adobe CS in the Windows environment
  • Strong verbal communicator and effective with teams, clients, consultants, and contractors
  • Excellent at analytical thinking and creating systems for efficiency and optimization
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and concurrent deadlines in a fluid, start-up environment
  • Accredited degree and licensed in the state of Washington or well in-process
  • Experience designing and coordinating prefabricated building systems or products is a plus
  • LEED accreditation and history of designing sustainable solutions is a plus
  • Eligible to work as a full-time employee in the United States is a requirement

Your Role & Responsibilities

Report directly to the CEO, creating a family of unique and exciting cottage designs, and bring them to market.  Specifically:

  • Lead an inspired design process across diverse domestic architectural styles, balancing inputs from our market & user research and budget
  • Optimize designs for construction, creating standards across the family, collaborating with our underwriting team, contractors, and consultants
  • Create construction-ready designs with complete CDs and permits
  • Guide construction administration to help deliver cottages on time and on budget, coordinating consultants, updating drawings, and fielding all RFIs and COs
  • Perpetually further our designs to improve our offering by delighting customers, honing construction efficiency, and optimizing costs

Compensation, Benefits & Work Environment

We are a small mission-based start-up, excited to be forming our own culture, environment, and systems.  Our studio is a relaxed office environment in the Madrona commercial core.  We provide for flexible schedules, offer generous time-off, and competitive compensation and benefits.
