Position Summary

Architectural Designer 2 - Junior/Intermediate Architectural designer position requires a passionate design professional with strong design and problem-solving skills to collaborate with team leaders (Project Manager, Project Architect and Lead Designer) to design, develop and deliver projects from concept to completion

Reporting Structure

Position reports to Project Lead Designer, Project Architect and Project Manager. Indirectly reports to Design Director and SMD (Studio Managing Director) for career goals, mentoring, conflict resolution, and overall design guidance.

Job Responsibilities

  • General Responsibilities: HLW Knowledge and Understanding
    • Develop a thorough knowledge and understanding of HLW Vision and Mission Statement and instill the meaning within all actions performed
    • Have a thorough knowledge of, and comply with, HLW office standards, policies, and procedures.
    • Follow company design templates for presentation graphics, coordinating specifications, contract documentation, etc.
    • Maintain neutral and ethical position in selection of but not limited to project materials.
    • Attend project meetings and contribute to design related meeting minutes if requested by the project manager.
    • Create cartoon sets for design phases of a project to communicate content and scope for each presentation under guidance of Lead Designer, Project Architect and Project Manager
  • Project Related: All Phases
    • Participate as a core member of a design team, contribute to design and documentation for all design phases under guidance and supervision of Lead Designer, Project Architect, Project Manager
    • Assist in managing client expectations. Lead team communication and consultant coordination.
    • Research manufacturers' materials, systems and specifications
    • Deepen knowledge and understanding of building materials, detailing, construction techniques, related engineering principles, sustainability strategies and building codes
    • Support junior design staff in the methods and design expectations of HLW.
  • Professional Development
    • Pursue professional development / IDP programs. Maintain continuing education units in accordance with  requirements set forth by AIA, USGBC, etc
    • Work with Design Director, Director of Architectural Design Practice Area Leader and Studio Managing Director(s) to establish career goals for advancement.
  • Quality Control / Quality Management
    • Review design solutions for all applicable building code, ADA regulations and systems compliance with senior technical staff and Project Architect.
    • Make every effort to attend HLW weekly technical meetings prepared by Senior Technical Architect to address construction and code issues.
  • Financial Management / Project Management
    • Have an understanding HLW Work Management Plan (WMP), project fee and hours assigned.
    • Design to established project construction budget.
    • Manage design efforts / hours with Project manager to maintain projected project hours of established fee.
    • Anticipate and communicate to project manager if requested scope will exceed the contracted work.
  • Organizational and Time Management Skills
    • Perform a high level of organizing skills with work files, correspondences, materials, etc.
    • Adhere to established HLW file naming conventions and project folder structures.
    • Streamline project management by using the right tools (i.e. Newforma)
    • Practice regular archiving and folder cleanups
    • Identify priorities when multitasking or under tight project schedule with help from senior team members.
  • Leadership / People Management
    • Develop leadership qualities and skills including positive attitude, team-working.
    • Provide advice and guidance to junior team members.
    • Contribute to a larger group and HLW's general good
  • Self-motivation / Studio and firm-wide Initiatives
    • Seek ideas and initiatives, with the guidance of Design Director and Studio Directors to improve design quality and fulfil HLW's goal for design excellence and position as industry leader.
  • Business Development and Marketing
    • Develop familiarity with the firm’s client and project portfolio and current projects.
    • Represent the firm in the industry by contributing to industry initiatives, conferences and assisting with public relations and new business activities.
    • Where requested, participate in new business development opportunities
    • Actively market the firm and increase awareness of the firm.

Role Qualifications

  • Professional architectural degree, B. Arch or higher, US Registered Architect a plus, LEED AP a plus
  • 4-6 years' design and construction experience including all phases of design
  • General technical understanding of design philosophy and capability to develop strategies to incorporate into the design.
  • Knowledge of building materials, detailing, construction techniques, related engineering principles, sustainability strategies and building codes
  • Proficient in Revit, AutoCAD, Adobe CS Suite, 3D modelling softwares (Rhino, SketchUp)
  • Ability to effectively communicate with design team
  • Strong graphic skills to communicate design ideas. Ability to efficiently prepare digital renderings and presentation materials.
  • Highly organized to take on multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced work environment
  • Knowledge of building codes, ADA requirements,
  • Knowledge of building materials, detailing, construction means and methods, related engineering principals and sustainability.
