The HGSD offers an exciting setting for interaction and the exchange of ideas through the combination of disciplines—architecture, landscape architecture, and urban planning and design—together with the research of our studio-based as well as MDes and Doctoral programs. We are seeking an energetic, organized, and forward-thinking individual who will work as part of a team to support the overall communications operation of the HGSD.

The Associate Editor will work under the direction of the Editor in Chief, Publications and Harvard Design Magazine, and will contribute to the development and implementation of the HGSD publications program. This individual will edit and (co-)produce a diverse range of publications on research, design, theory, and events generated by or related to the HGSD. 

Collaborates closely with Editor in Chief and publications team to develop, implement, and promote the GSD publications program including existing series (Platform, Studio Reports, The Incidents, Harvard Design Studies, Harvard Design Magazine, New Geographies), copublications, and new projects or series. 
 

  • Contributes to the conceptual, intellectual, and creative vision of the department and individual publications.
  • Collaborates with and supports authors/editors, including faculty and students, in development of publication concepts, structures, design, and content.
  • Edits and proofreads text and/or supervises freelance editors. Occasionally writes/rewrites text, credits, captions, press releases, abstracts, and other copy.
  • Monitors workflow of contributors, freelance editors, designers, proofreaders, and printers, from giving assignments to proofing final layouts, to processing invoices. Communicates with publishing partners, distributors, and booksellers as necessary.
  • Ensures GSD style guide is maintained and enforced consistently.
  • Steers, supports, and collaborates with designers.
  • Develops and monitors project budgets and schedules in collaboration with Publications Coordinator. 
  • Collaborates with Publications Manager on image acquisition and rights for GSD publications and magazine.
  • Helps build the GSD publications “brand” through promotional materials, annual catalog, online presence, events, and general publicity/outreach. Helps develop presence of publications on new GSD website.
  • Contributes to developing sales strategy and outreach tools for overall program and individual projects.
  • Helps to plan and execute GSD book sales, launch events, and presence at international book fairs, conferences, or exhibitions.
  • Periodically attends relevant GSD lectures and events, including Option Studio presentations and reviews as necessary.
  • May be involved in developing new concepts for series or projects. 

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and minimum of 5 years of progressive editing/publishing experience. 
  • Excellent written communication skills and demonstrated editing and proofreading experience.  ·
  • Knowledge of design disciplines and design publishing. 
  • Intellectually engaged in content and GSD culture; well versed in current topics in design discourse.
  •  Demonstrated proficiency with online editing/publishing programs.
  • Working knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style. 

Additional Qualifications

Candidate must be highly organized, systematic, proactive, flexible, dedicated, able to work well alone or in group situations on multiple simultaneous projects. 
• Candidate must be able to drive projects, manage freelancers, meet deadlines, and participate in all facets of publishing process. 

Comfortable working in close collaboration with faculty, students, and practitioners of architecture, design, and design history/theory.

Sensitive and thoughtful about text, images, design/materials; independent, creative, pragmatic, hands-on, detail-oriented. 

• Experienced, critical, detail-oriented text editor and proofreader with expertise in typographic and stylistic conventions.  
• Familiarity with contemporary graphic design and experience with the design process. 
• Experience with online/digital publishing desirable. 
• Knowledge of printing process and materials desirable. 
• Experience working in or with academic environments desirable, (preferably architecture, design, or visual arts)   . 
• Active network in architecture, design, publishing. 
•Able to draft and manage project budgets. 
• Knowledge of Adobe Suite preferred.
