Responsibilities

Design Materials and Building Science Research

  • Expertise and thought leadership regarding materials, material science and human and environmental health across multiple projects and market sectors
  • Building materials and sustainable strategies research
  • Represent GGLO in industry committees, conferences and forums
  • Stay updated with current codes and standards, and potential changes

Knowledge Sharing & Education

  • Assisting in the creation and delivery of educational programming and materials
  • Keep track of new material/research information
  • Maintain a physical display and space to ensure an optimal user experience
  • Manage resource information, provide tours and information as needed to support teams
  • Research products and materials to understand, develop, and define library selections
  • Meet with resource vendors to develop and refine new product selections
  • Present new materials each month to staff for potential inclusion in the library
  • Share new materials information, research, and building science applications through regular internal social media posts

Project Design Assistance

  • Research and make available specification technical resource tools to project teams and individuals involved in the production of specifications
  • Work with project teams across market sectors to research, select, and specify lower impact materials on all GGLO projects
  • Work with higher aspirational project teams with specific responsibility of advancing that project’s ability to select, specify and build with lower impact materials

Construction Phase Assistance

  • Assist during bidding and construction administration when necessary
  • Assist with submittals like product substitutions and shop drawings when necessary

Requirements

Knowledge and Skills

  • Knowledge of design, building and structural products
  • Knowledge of design, industry trends, construction methodology, and material application.
  • Knowledge of material science and relationship to human and environmental health and wellbeing
  • Strong project experience, proving a good understanding of building technology and practical knowledge of coordinating specifications with drawings
  • Knowledge and experience with project delivery including material selection process, specifications, material and system procurement and submittal process
  • Working knowledge or familiarity with life-cycle assessment process and software
  • Working knowledge of professional practice issues and documents relating to specifications
  • Knowledge of CSI principles and construction materials required
  • Experience with professional material databases such as Giga, BuildingGreen, Pharos and others
  • Knowledge of sustainable principles and LEED accreditation
  • Knowledge of Environmental Product Declarations (EPD s) and Health Product Declarations (HPD s)
  • Knowledge of Substances of Concern as they relate to human and public health

  • Passion for advancing the design profession knowledge, engagement and implementation of low impact, healthier building materials
  • Enjoys working with project teams and advocating for responsible material selection
  • Derives personal satisfaction from working on the hard problem because it matters
  • Demonstrated ability to productively interface with design teams; ability to communicate with and understand the needs of project teams
  • Strong organizational skills and management style appropriate to responsibilities
  • Able to look at projects from various scales, the big picture and the details
  • Able to effectively communicate with clients and project teams in an inspiring and productive manner
  • Articulate and comfortable public speaker able to lead and/or participate in sustainability charrettes with clients

Qualifications

  • 8-10 years of experience in an Architectural/Engineering firm, or with a General Contractor
  • Accredited Professional Architecture degree or Materials Science degree preferred
  • Architectural registration, LEED accreditation, and certification as Specifications writer preferred
  • Skilled computer knowledge, specifically Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, Bluebeam
  • Knowledge of latest analysis and design software, including Revit
  • Internet navigation skills for researching products, manufacturers, codes & standards, and rules & regulations as related to writing specifications.
