The Specifications Writer for GGLO will act as a technical liaison to project teams, coordinating project specification deliverables and design guidelines throughout all phases of project design. They will define the quality of materials and workmanship, providing quality assurance and incorporating these into construction and project documents. This role requires a high level of collaboration, the ability to multi-task and work cross-functionally across all locations in the firm, and a desire to grow teams through education and mentorship. Success in this role means, delivering innovative education and training firm-wide, partnering with the quality assurance group to verify requirements are met within project specifications, and building and maintaining relationships with product manufacturers.

Responsibilities

Firm Responsibilities

  • Develop GGLO’s specification processes and standards; develop and maintain custom specification masters and inserts.
  • Research and make available specification technical resource tools to project teams and individuals involved in the production of specifications
  • Convey a broad knowledge of building codes, structures, basic construction law and materials standards to others
  • Enhancing and maintaining office master specifications with the other project based specification writers
  • Assist with quality control and quality assurance processes
  • Validate compliance with applicable codes, regulations, and standards
  • Participates in weekly Design Team meetings and department staff meetings. Offers opportunities for process and standard improvement
  • Understand product design requirements and translates those requirements into specifications for materials, methods, equipment, procedures, installation, and certification testing necessary to install and erect building components
  • Participate in developing and improving GGLO document standards and best practice procedures and bridges the gap between design professionals, specifications, LEED, QA/QC and construction administration
  • Function as a technical leader and active member of GGLO’s technical group
  • Identify design and technical problems, and proposes solutions to recommend to the appropriate Design and Quality managers
  • Participate in fostering a green workplace through sustainable work practices and integrates sustainable design initiatives into specifications
  • Upkeep and organization of resource library
  • Meet with resource vendors to develop and refine new product selections

Project Responsibilities

  • Assist Principals and Project Managers is developing fee proposals related to materials selection and specifications.
  • Consult with Project Managers to meet deadlines, and engage in quality management process
  • Prepare project specifications while advising project teams as they write Schematic Design narratives
  • Interview project teams and reviewing architectural plans to prepare specifications; assist teams in determining material and contract requirements for projects
  • Participate directly in meetings and communications with Pre-Construction services consultants and contractors, builders, sub-contractors and fabricators during all phases of design to understand project constraints and needs, and assist with developing solutions for the design team
  • Review documents and coordinates with design team to write and edit specifications for products
  • Prepare the product technical specifications package for project. Understand and administer the established process by including a checklist for each specification section and identifying principle decisions needed for each project; develop 3-part specifications from narrative as the project develops and defines requirements
  • Review drawings and specifications to coordinate nomenclature
  • Coordinate specifications with Building Information Modeling (BIM) strategies and specification writing software
  • Work to achieve equitable design decisions agreements without comprising important principles
  • Assist project teams in resolving problems related to the use and installation of building materials and products that arise during design and construction

Requirements

  • 5-10 years of experience in an Architectural/Engineering firm; or with a General Contractor
  • Architecture Degree from an accredited University in the United States
  • Knowledge of sustainable principles – LEED accreditation preferred
  • Experience with Microsoft Word and Masterspec, BSD SpecLink, Bluebeam, Revit, Sketch-Up, AutoCAD, Photoshop, Microsoft Office Suite, Link Manager
  • Strong project experience, proving a good understanding of building technology and practical knowledge of coordinating specifications with drawings
  • Working knowledge of professional practice issues and documents relating to specifications, including special requirements for front-end specifications
  • Ability to communicate with and understand the needs of project teams
  • Previous experience with medium and large-scale projects required
  • Knowledge of design, industry trends, construction methodology, and material application.
  • Demonstrated understanding of building codes, building systems, and construction material standards.
  • CSIs Certification such as CDT (Construction Documents Technology) or CCS (Certified Construction Specifier) or equivalent preferred
  • Authorization to work in the United States
