Opportunity: The College of Architecture and Environmental Design (CAED) at Kent State University invites applications and nominations for the annual Schidlowski Emerging Faculty Fellowship starting Fall 2019. This nine-month residency is designed to engage promising junior faculty candidates in a dynamic and progressive academic environment at the outset of an architecture faculty career. In addition to a competitive teaching salary for the 2019-20 academic year, the fellowship provides a separate fund to support the production of an original design research project to be exhibited during the Spring 2020 semester.

Qualifications: The successful candidate must hold, at minimum, an accredited Master of Architecture (M.Arch) degree or its equivalent. They should also show exceptional promise for teaching architectural design studios and other courses that productively engage their own creative work. Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate previous success in university teaching, innovative research, and/or experimental design practice.

The CAED’s distinguished faculty, cutting-edge facilities, and established programs in Architecture, Interior Design, Urban Design, Landscape Architecture, Architectural Studies,  Health Care Design, and Construction Management offer numerous cross-disciplinary research opportunities and maintain close relationships with regional industry and design practice. Resources include a new state of the art Fabrication Lab equipped with a robotics lab, lighting lab, metal fabrication lab, cnc mill, laser cutters, 3d printing farm, among others; unique international study opportunities; a progressive extra-curricular lecture and exhibition series; and campus partnerships with other units including the highly regarded Schools of Art, Fashion Design, and Visual Communication Design.

The CAED has become an effective arm for extending the University’s growing emphasis on applied research. Its 32 full-time faculty and over 1,000 undergraduate and graduate students now occupy three exciting locations: the spectacular new 107,000 sq. ft. Center for Architecture and Environmental Design designed by Weiss/Manfredi on the edge of downtown Kent; the Cleveland Studios in Playhouse Square; and the recently renovated Palazzo Vettori in the historic center of Florence, Italy.

Located midway between New York and Chicago in the Cleveland/Akron metro area, Kent State University is an ascending national research university in the heart of a burgeoning cultural and industrial region that is home to some of the world’s finest art museums, parks, universities, restaurants, theaters, music venues, and independent cinemas. These include recent buildings and landscapes designed by Coop Himmelb(l)au, James Corner, Frank Gehry, Farshid Moussavi, NADAAA, Laurie Olin, Stanley Saitowitz and Rafael Viñoly.
