Smithsonian Museum Retail seeks an experienced and creative Senior Architectural Designer in our Washington DC office to develop design and construction documents for museum retail projects of different scales and complexity. Projects include museum stores, concessions, restaurants, theaters - integrating business activities within Smithsonian Museums and Facilities, including project schedules, budgets, quality, performance, and client satisfaction.

Key duties include the following:

  • Develops design, identifies construction, budget breakout and schedule for a variety of retail projects.
  • Uses full range of drafting techniques to design and draw projects to scale.
  • Selects and arranges for purchase of all materials needed to complete smaller projects. 
  • Researches and selects vendors, materials, finishes and equipment.
  • Recommends budget allocation and contingencies, and prepares cost estimates.
  • Resolves pricing or other purchase order variances, and manages paperwork for payment.
  • Participates project reviews, ensures that proper processes are followed, and provides feedback as necessary.
  • Prepares and presents initial and final design concepts.
  • Collaborates with museum partners for space allocation and design ideas, and works to design and create retail space that supports daily operations and temporary exhibitions.
  • Assists in the preparation and presentation of initial and final design concepts.
  • Initiates and/or attends progress meetings to discuss necessary modifications and constraints imposed on the original design. 
  • Develops and maintains a portfolio of before and after project design for the record.
  • Serves as Design manager to regularly oversee the design and construction of assigned work and/or collaborates with Project Manager for new and existing projects.
  • Schedules progress meetings with all involved parties to discuss necessary modifications and constraints imposed on the original design.  Follows-up on the progress of projects, troubleshoots and works to resolve problems.
  • Maintains records of all assigned project details of actual vs. budgeted costs, time lines and outcomes.

Qualified candidates will have a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture and Design and 6+ years of progressively responsible experience in architectural design.  Master’s Degree in Interior Design and LEED accreditation preferred. Experience with an emphasis on retail, restaurant or other profit center projects preferred. Broad and diverse knowledge of architectural principles and practices, combined with strong graphic, written and verbal communication skills

  • Knowledge of design intent and technical drawing
  • Knowledge of proper use of public space coordinated with functional and aesthetic designs including ADA requirements
  • Ability to obtain and evaluate bids, and develop and work within budgets
  • Demonstrated collaboration and team building skills.
  • Strong presentation skills.
  • Essential knowledge and experience in design and review construction documents
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks of varying complexity concurrently—range of 6-12 projects.
  • Strong knowledge of building codes, accessibility, and best practices in construction for public spaces
  • Extensive experience in construction document preparation, reviewing, red-lining,
  • Experience project specifications, and procurement.
  • Excellent skills in AutoCAD, MS Office, Adobe Creative Suite, Revit, SketchUp and other 3D modeling programs. Must have proficiency in designing, detailing and producing CAD drawings from SD through CD's

Oversight and coordination of work generally includes working outside of normal business hours.

We are looking for a creative self-starter, with the ability to manage multiple projects with varying and changing deadlines.

Salary: $61k - $75k annually, commensurate with experience
