JOB DESCRIPTION

Orkidstudio is looking to grow its team by bringing on a Senior Designer/ Architect to oversee a portfolio of design projects. The successful applicant will be able to work within a dynamic and challenging environment alongside a highly talented team, driven by social impact and creating architecture that significantly impacts health and dignity in the built environment.

We are also looking for a Senior Healthcare Designer with significant experience in the design and delivery of hospitals. Expertise on this will be highly valued.

 

This is a full-time position based at our Nairobi office in Kenya and candidates should have minimum 15 years’ experience.

DETAILED RESPONSIBILITIES

    Architectural Designer:

    • Manage the execution of design projects from beginning to end, within budget and according to agreed-upon timelines;
    • Oversee contract administration and liaise and maintain communications with project clients, professional consultants and any other individuals or groups involved in each project;
    • Ensure compliance with regulations and codes and have a strong understanding of quality standards;
    • Ensure compliance and alignment of all design projects with Orkidstudio’s social impact strategies;
    • Have a detailed knowledge of the technical aspects of construction, including experience with a variety of building systems (RC frame, masonry, timber frame and earthen methods are particularly relevant);
    • Experience with on-site construction administration;
    • Makes independent decisions on architectural problems and methods;
    • Reviews and approves all work performed under his supervision;
    • Applies skills to minimise risks and vulnerabilities and seeks means to improve efficiencies and reduce costs;
    • Trained in commonly-used industry software (AutoCAD, MS Excel, Project), and an aptitude for learning new software;
    • Strong leadership skills and confidence directing and supervising teams of people;
    • A strong aptitude for problem-solving and clear decision-making within a challenging and pressured environment;
    • Mentor and supervise less experienced Designers and Drafters to build their capacity, confidence and knowledge.

     

    Social Impact:

    • Experience training or working with community teams, especially in design or construction, is a bonus.

    Desired Candidate Profile

    • Minimum 15 years’ experience in architecture;
    • Willing and able to travel within East Africa and Zambia;
    • Passionate about developing communities and empowering women in the workforce;
    • Entrepreneurial, independent and proactive worker, able to multi-task under pressure;
    • Strong communication and listening skills to promote a collaborative environment;
    • Attention to detail, especially ensuring safety and legality;
    • Key managerial skills, including having had control over project budgets and schedules;
    • Strong expertise coordinating projects and ensuring high quality outcomes;
    • Expertise in healthcare design will be especially valued;
    • Experience working with alternative building materials would be a plus (non-essential);
    • Registered with a relevant professional board or body a plus (non-essential).
