The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) provides global leadership for a research, training, and education program to promote the prevention and treatment of heart, lung, and blood diseases and enhance the health of all individuals so that they can live longer and more fulfilling lives.

The Office of Intramural Management, Space + Design Branch, has three primary responsibilities in its support of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute – maintain an extensive, multi-user database of all DIR space, coordinate day to day workplace needs, and manage renovation projects varying in scale.  The Project Architect/Manager will work on a team with 7 other members of the Space + Design Branch to execute all aspects of this mission. The candidate will work with renowned scientific, clinical and administrative staff to translate their workplace needs into architectural solutions.  Project types range from biomedical laboratories, hospital clinics and commercial offices.

Necessary Skills/Background: 

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher  
  • 5 years of project management experience in facility management, construction, engineering, architecture, or planning industries
  • Dynamic personality with a high level of interpersonal skills in order to deal effectively and persuasively with all levels of an organization
  • Proficient with AutoCAD and Microsoft Office, with ability to apply other project management tools
  • Experience writing detailed scopes of work, estimating costs, developing programs of requirement, reviewing construction documents for compliance, and managing schedules
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize complex tasks
  • Ability to manage and simultaneously coordinate high-priority short and long-term projects

Position Duties:

  • Acts as Project Architect/Manager to oversee renovation projects ranging in scale from $25,000 - $2 Million
  • Works closely with end-user to develop programs of requirement for all new renovation projects
  • Provides Principal Investigators with regular project status updates
  • Responsible for electrical/mechanical construction document review and A/E coordination
  • Maintains accurate project records for active projects based on current record management system
  • Contributes to space planning and database management of 350,000 usable square feet occupied by the institute in various buildings
  • Coordinates day to day facility needs with electrical, mechanical and architectural contractors
  • Manages comprehensive project schedules for all active renovations and develop long-range work plans
  • Conducts project close out reviews to reflect on current processes and identify areas for improvement
  • Initiates, coordinates, and implements special Division programs and projects
