The major work of this professional is to provide administrative, clerical, and logistical support to the Head Designer. The necessary tasks will range from taking notes, measure spaces, design input, creating drawings (plans and elevations in CAD software), working with vendors and clients, gathering procuring information, specifications and samples. It is important for Interior Design Assistants to maintain good knowledge of vendors and market research of new products. A major aspect is purchasing activities and you will be entrusted with the entirety of ordering and purchasing.

The assistant must have the following attributes:

Interior Design Tasks:

  • Develop Project Design with Principal Direction.
  • Perform Market Research work.
  • Assist Lead Designer with installations, coordinate deliveries and handle post installation follow up activities.
  • Assist with marketing developments and associated activities.
  • Provide support in sourcing materials, ordering and procuring samples. 
  • Act as a bridge between lead interior designer, vendors and contractor.
  • Provide administrative support to help assist lead designer.
  • Attend design shows.
  • Attend local design events.
  • Travel to/from design centers and showrooms for research and sample review.
  • Stay engaged in profession with peers and other professionals.
  • Manage design libraries of resources and maintain files and binders.
  • Specify materials and furnishings, such as lighting, furniture, wall finishes, flooring and plumbing fixtures.
  • Sketch preliminary design plans, including electrical layouts.
