Architect - Model Fabricator

Safdie Architects is looking to expand our world class model making studio with the creation of a brand new position; Architect Model-Fabricator. Since the firm was started by Moshe Safdie over 50 years ago models have served as an essential tool throughout our design and presentation process. We are seeking candidates with an architectural background and a passion for model fabrication that will serve as a vital link between our design teams and our model making studio.

Headquartered in Somerville, MA with offices in Toronto, Jerusalem, Singapore and Shanghai to support ongoing projects, Safdie Architects is constantly engaged in the design of a diverse range of projects in terms of building type, scale and geographic location. Current work in design and construction includes the National Medal of Honor Museum in South Carolina; an expansion of Singapore’s Changi International Airport; medical education and research facilities in Sao Paulo, Brazil; a hospital in Cartagena, Colombia; and mixed-use developments in Saudi Arabia, China and Singapore.

Your role as Architect Model-Fabricator will be multifaceted. The primary focus of your work will be to aid our design teams with the fabrication of study models in collaboration with junior architects, and, when necessary, our senior model makers. You will be expected to work with members of the design team to both help conceive of fabrication methods, and manage junior staff through the building process.  Often, you will be working with multiple teams simultaneously serving a key function in our often fast-paced, iterative design process. As such, you will be expected to schedule and prioritize between a variety of efforts and deadlines. Additionally, we will be looking to you to help us develop and expand our digital model fabrication process by keeping up to date on and suggesting new technologies and methods when appropriate. At times you may also be asked to help support one of our design teams in the production of digital files used for model production, or to work as an apprentice model maker alongside our senior staff as workloads fluctuate.

Some of the skills, qualities and interests we are looking for include:

  • Architectural background with a passion for model fabrication
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Knowledge of Autocad, Revit, Rhino and Adobe Suite
  • Experience building clean study models out of foam, foam core and other materials requiring basic hand tools to fabricate.
  • Background and interest in digital fabrication
  • Experience operating a laser cutter and/or 3D printer
  • Machine tool experience is a plus
  • Authorization to work in the United States
