Store Design Freelancer

This position provides an array of design services from project inception to construction completion. This individual will fill the role of a key team resource in the areas of architectural and fixture design, code analysis, lighting and mechanical plans, operational needs, materials and finishes, and construction detailing. Cross-functional relationships include Construction, Purchasing, and Real Estate; Operations, Visual, Creative Services, and Marketing; Wholesale; and Facilities.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • In the planning/pre-design stages, provide building code overview for all gut check requests (new/potential space evaluations).
  • Provide conceptual design services for all projects.
  • Manage the internal routing and approval process for all projects, obtaining sign-offs from all required stakeholders.
  • Oversee design development and construction drawing process, providing final design approvals and reviewing A/E drawings. In-depth drawing review is required for every project.
  • Review and approve vendor shop drawings, including but not limited to speaker system, stock shelving, and millwork.
  • Along with the VP of Construction and the Architect (external), act as point of contact for RFIs during bid and construction phases.
  • Maintain brand design standards for each division, ensuring that brand aesthetic is upheld and store’s operational and visual needs are met.
  • Provide Marketing partners with barricade/window graphics kickoff package for all new stores.
  • Provide design guidance and insight on new fixture development and new store concepts, partnering with outside architects as required. Create sketches, 2D and 3D drawings as required for conceptual design of new fixtures and stores.
  • Provide design solutions for store maintenance/repair requests (in partnership with Facilities).
  • Provide design solutions for accessibility complaints (in partnership with Legal and Facilities).


  • 5 years minimum of experience in architecture, with extensive retail design experience.
  • Building code and ADA expertise a must.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD (preferably for Mac), SketchUp, and Adobe Photoshop and InDesign required.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and structural systems a must.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Architecture required.
  • In-house retail experience strongly preferred.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, changing environment. Must work well both independently and with a team.
