Commercial Practice Leader

HKS is looking for a Commercial Practice Leader in our growing Atlanta office. This exceptional design leader will create outstanding design solutions and enthusiasm for the region. As we continue to grow our Corporate and Commercial practice, this designer will become an identifiable and influential leader, both internally and externally, contributing to the expansion of the sector. In addition to innovative design, this role will have the opportunity to collaborate with and mentor talented individuals, as well as partner with other key leaders to strategically develop the practice and generate new business. This unique person will also positively contribute to the overall leadership of our growing Atlanta office, working in a diverse environment with an established and talented team.


Overall Design Leadership

  • Demonstrate an innovative and collaborative multi-disciplinary approach to design as a prevailing cultural attribute at HKS
  • Convey a command of the factors influencing Corporate and Commercial design for build-to-suit and office-driven core and shell projects
  • Assume a proactive stance in communication with all internal and external teams and clients
  • Recognize opportunities to provide a contextual, sustainable design approach on a range of projects, especially when the opportunity might not be obvious
  • With the entire design team, continually explore, improve on and evaluate new and best uses for technology for presentation and production
  • Coordinate with the Atlanta office leadership on:
  • Managing overall project budgets and milestone schedules
  • Leading periodic project meetings and presentations
  • Ensuring that clients and team members are adequately briefed on projects throughout the planning process

Project Design Leadership

  • Working with the design staff in the Atlanta office, as well as other leaders relevant to each project, translate concepts into comprehensible, convincing terms providing design direction for clients, designers and other team members.
  • Participate in conceptual design for selected projects and participate in development of the design through project designers

Practice building

Develop an expanded practice in Corporate and Commercial design and planning by:

  • Acting as a responsible and knowledgeable senior-level “face” of HKS – Atlanta’s commercial practice when engaging prospective clients or other influencers, particularly at the executive level
  • Identifying opportunities for design, planning and asset stewardship among the Atlanta region’s most significant real estate and development individuals and organizations
  • Building a practice by attracting and mentoring experienced staff with a track record of work in the corporate and/or commercial sectors. Coach them in business development and marketing to build a group of seller-doers
  • Setting overall project revenue and profitability targets and monitoring performance to meet or exceed them
  • Ensure that the practice evolves in a manner which is consistent with the goals and core values of HKS Atlanta, as well as the firm’s overall goals for development of the Corporate and Commercial practice

Business development

  • Work with Mark Buskuhl and Mike Nicolaus to develop a plan for acquisition of new Corporate / Commercial and Mixed-use clients, respectively, that helps further HKS’ goals in that sector
  • Work with Julie Volosin to tailor the plan to the Atlanta region and the HKS Atlanta goals
  • Maintain current understanding of the trends, influences and pressures affecting corporate and commercial building design and development in the Atlanta area
  • Create visibility for HKS Atlanta within the development and Corporate communities so that the firm will be considered for significant design and planning projects through:
  • Active engagement with both community and Corporate and Commercial sector organizations and activities
  • Leveraging existing relationships, enthusiastically conveying to them a compelling picture of why HKS is the firm to consider for future opportunities
  • Speaking and writing about issues of consequence to the Corporate and Commercial community in the Atlanta region
  • Working with HKS’ marketing and PR staff to ensure that Corporate and Commercial work and visibility is communicated to an Atlanta region audience
  • Secure a sufficient number of the appropriate assignments to meet the firm’s overall business goals



  • Professional degree in Architecture
  • License to practice architecture, preferably in Georgia
  • LEED accreditation and / or WELL accreditation strongly preferred
  • At least 15 years' experience, at least 10 of which have been focused on Commercial clients (e.g. developers of office, multifamily residential, mixed-use, retail, and/or hospitality space, corporate entities)
  • Experience with firm(s) that HKS Atlanta admires for thoughtful design solutions to complex, larger-scale client requirements
  • Evidence of the ability to attract work through in-depth knowledge of Corporate and Commercial building trends in the Atlanta area
