The San Francisco office is looking for an Intermediate Architect to join our team. Our practices include Healthcare, Higher Education, Science + Technology and Workplace. We offer local, national and international projects of all sizes including opportunities to work with our other offices. Working with us, you will:

  • Work independently to provide the full range of architectural services on small to medium-sized projects or to oversee certain aspects of larger projects as part of a team.
  • Refine and further develop design concepts given by others.
  • Create and develop planning and design concepts for more complex projects.
  • Oversee design work of others to ensure and integrated and cohesive design.
  • Present design solutions to client representatives and/or design review committees.
  • Supervise the development of renderings for client presentations.
  • Coordinate drawings with drawings of other disciplines.
  • Find technical solutions to deliver the design through documentation and detailing while preserving the design intent.
  • Relate building design concepts to building codes, zoning ordinances and other external issues.
  • Prepare, develop, edit and coordinate specifications with drawings to meet project requirements.
  • Evaluate, select and/or approve materials and products.
  • Provide oversight and monitoring of the work performed by junior staff.
  • Follow and enforce quality control procedures.
  • Lead day-to-day Construction Administration activities, including coordination with the Contractor, Owner and Consultants to maintain project progress.
  • Receive instruction on specific assignment objectives and independently provide solutions for these objectives.
  • Support more senior staff on large projects.

An ideal candidate has:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Architecture.
  • 6 to 12 years’ work experience in the profession.
  • A license to practice architecture (preferred) or is currently eligible to take the Architectural Registration Examination (ARE).
  • LEED accreditation (preferred).
  • High proficiency and extensive experience using current design software (Revit, Sketch Up) as well as Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience using some or all of the Adobe Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, In-Design).
  • Ability to communicate ideas well both graphically and verbally.
  • Strong analytical and conceptual skills and ability to grasp complex functional program requirements.
  • Strong background in design.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • The ability to work well in a team environment with a collaborative and professional work ethic.

SmithGroupJJR offers competitive compensation and an excellent benefit package, including 401(k) and continuing educational reimbursement. We offer three weeks of paid time off within the first year of employment, with the option of purchasing additional time off, and pay for seven or eight federal holidays. We also offer an alternative work schedule that provides employees with an additional 15 days off per year (usually Fridays) to help with work/life balance.
