Position Description

Provides architectural design leadership, vision, support and review for projects of all sizes and types on campus. The University Architect shall ensure the University architectural vernacular, both for exterior and interior spaces on campus, are preserved and/or enhanced. The University Architect is responsible to ensure excellence in design on all projects in order to successfully achieve programmatic, functional and financial objectives, while creating a cohesive and distinguished built environment for the Long Beach State Campus.

Supervise the Design and Construction Service's Design Team consisting of a production coordinator (interior designer), and multiple interior architecture design interns. The UA will establish expectations, provide mentoring and coaching, identify opportunities for job and career development, and provide both informal and formal feedback. UA will develop staffing recommendations and workload balancing of assigned staff while ensuring that project and department goals are met within the prescribed time frames and budgets.

Responsible for the direct project management and/or design of various projects primarily consisting of minor capital construction, tenant improvements, interior design/furniture and graphic design for the University.

Provides direct assistance, and can represent, the Campus Deputy Building Official, who is responsible for the enforcement of all applicable building codes and standards on campus property or campus occupied facilities.

Provide advice and professional support to campus representatives on matters related to campus architecture and design in support of the academic mission of the university. Develop and maintain comprehensive campus design standards and interior design standards for the University. Collaborate with Senior Department Leadership on matters related to design and architecture, and participate in the development, implementation and update of department wide initiatives.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Thorough knowledge and understanding of architectural principles, practices, and procedures. Thorough understanding and knowledge of the laws, ordinances, and other regulations applicable to building, construction, maintenance and repair including building codes for the state of California, fire codes, and industry standards. Ability to perform accessibility plan check for projects of all types and sizes. Thorough knowledge and understanding of interior design principles, practices, and procedures. Leadership and management skills to lead project committees and manage professional teams. Ability to analyze and resolve a wide range of complex problems, and be able to be multi-task as related to construction development. Ability to function in a collaborative team environment and build and maintain effective relations with the College's various constituencies. Effective supervisory skills and demonstrated ability to mentor, coach and develop staff. Ability to think strategically and tactically. Ability to represent the ADDCS at meetings and conferences involving campus, University, state and federal levels of authority, in matters related to architectural requirements and fiscal issues. Knowledge of the principles and requirements for sustainability. Working knowledge of CAD/GIS applications and their use in a design and construction environment. Understanding of construction concepts and their relationship to building costs. Ability to read and accurately interpret blueprints and specifications. Ability to work independently with a "Results oriented" personality, committed to delivering projects on budget and schedule to the established quality standard. Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Demonstrated ability to successfully interact with executive management and a wide range of internal/external constituents within a shared governance environment. Ability to communicate effectively within an ethnically and diverse campus community. Excellent administrative and organizational skills. Proficiency in PC-compatible software programs, such as Word, Excel, Access, Adobe, Bluebeam and Plan Grid.

Education and Experience

Bachelor Degree in architecture, engineering, interior design, construction management or related field and seven years of progressively responsible full time work experience in a related field required. Equivalent experience (or combination of education and experience) in architecture, interior design, project management, engineering or construction management will be considered as a substitution for a degree on a year for year basis.

7 years of progressively responsible related experience in design and construction industry required, with 3 or more years of experience in an institutional or public setting.

Previous CSU, UC or other higher education design, project management or architectural experience preferred.

Management experience that emphasizes teamwork, participation, partnership, communication, collaboration, and team development.

Licenses / Certificates

Valid CA Driver's License, Class C required.

Current license as a professional architect in the State of California, or if out of state, ability to obtain CA license within one year from date of hire.

Ability to obtain the DSA Certified Accessibility Specialist (CASp) certification within 1 year of the date of hire.

Conflict of Interest

The duties of this position will include participation in decisions that may have a material financial benefit to the incumbent. Therefore, the selected candidate will be required to file Conflict of Interest Form 700: Statement of Economic Interest on an annual basis, complete ethics training within 6 months of appointment, and attend this training every other year thereafter.
