SmithGroupJJR is looking to grow our team in the Madison office. We have an exciting opportunity for a Project Architect interested in contributing to their talent by joining our team.


Working with us, you will:


  • Manage one or more small to medium-sized projects and/or manage a portion of a large-sized project.
  • Perform architectural drawings, renderings and design assignments.
  • Produce and coordinate a complete set of construction documents for permitting and bidding for small projects.
  • Lead coordination of consultants of all disciplines.
  • Prepare, develop, and edit specifications.
  • Lead day-to-day construction administration activities.
  • Provides oversight and monitoring of the work performed by junior staff.
  • Establish and execute project work plan and staffing requirements.
  • Develops trusted relationships with clients.
  • Be able to independently provide the full range of architectural services on a small to medium-sized project.
  • Find technical solutions to deliver the design through documentation and detailing while preserving the design intent.
  • Be able to prepare, coordinate, and complete a construction documents package.
  • Lead coordination of consultants of all disciplines.
  • Prepare, develop, and edit specifications.
  • Evaluate, select and/or approve materials and products.
  • Lead day-to-day construction administration activities including coordination with the Contractor, Owner, and Consultants to maintain project progress.
  • Refine and further develop design concepts given by others.
  • Create and develop planning and design concepts for more complex projects.
  • Oversee design work of others to ensure an integrated and cohesive design.
  • Present design solutions to client representative and/or design review committees.
  • Supervise the development of renderings for client presentations.
  • Manage one or more small to medium-sized projects (including negotiating project scope, job production and quality, fee management and collection).
  • Evaluate job performance and organize and lead team meetings involving consultants and/or owners.
  • Establish and maintain project staffing requirements consistent with contractual obligations.
  • Provide oversight and monitoring of the work performed by junior staff.
  • Follow and enforce quality control procedures.
  • Coordinate all trades and agencies related to building design to preserve design intent.
  • Obtain agency approvals on construction documents.
  • Mentor and train junior and intermediate staff.
  • Participate in the preparation of proposals after being given the vision and strategy for the marketing effort.
  • Maintain and develop relationships with past, current and new clients.
  • Take an active role in a local professional association


An ideal candidate has:


  • Has a Bachelor’s degree and minimum 10-15 years of experience. RA required. LEED AP preferred.
  • Is technically competent and has proven growth in schematic design through construction administration.
  • Is detail oriented and self-motivated.
  • Is proficient with technical detailing.
  • Possesses working knowledge of engineering systems; the ability to understand and communicate with professionals of other disciplines.
  • Is knowledgeable of the design and construction process, applicable building codes, detailing methods, and product specification methods.
  • Has a demonstrated ability to communicate with clients, and build client relationships and trust.
  • High proficiency with Revit, AutoCAD, Sketch-up, Photoshop, Illustrator and In-Design programs. 
  • Ability to produce and coordinate a complete set of construction documents for permitting and bidding on small projects.
  • Ability to demonstrate effectiveness in working in a team setting, communicating with others, customer satisfaction and technical competence.


SmithGroupJJR offers competitive compensation and an excellent benefit package, including 401(k) and continuing educational reimbursement. We offer 3 weeks of paid time off within the first year of employment, with the option of purchasing additional time off, and pay for 8 federal holidays. We also offer an alternative work schedule that provides employees with an additional 15 days off per year (usually Fridays) to help with work/life balance.
