Position Summary

A Senior Design Strategist is responsible for leading client-facing projects and project teams on discovery activities, strategy development, and change management projects.  A majority of this work is embedded within the programming and general pre-design scope of interior and architectural projects.  Other work involves a variety of internal firm-wide projects and initiatives that advance HLW’s position as a thought leader and as a data-driven design practice that stays ahead of marketplace trends that add client value.  A Senior Design Strategist is a trusted advisor to clients and the people of HLW. This position reports to the both the Director of Strategy and Discovery as well as the Managing Director of the London Office. 

Job Responsibilities

  • General Responsibilities: HLW Knowledge & Understanding
    • Serve as a senior member of the global Strategy & Discovery team who owns various team-wide initiatives that advance the team’s business goals and objectives.
    • While leveraging their unique skill set, establishes themselves as a firm-wide trusted advisor in a niche or special capability that adds value to client projects or the firm’s broader goals and initiatives.
  • Project Related – All Phases
    • Assume responsibility for the development of key project deliverables for workplace strategy, space programming, change management, and research activities. 
    • Handle various project-related tasks, including workshop preparation facilitation, take part in interviews with clients and their representatives, research and analytical exercises, and space programming.
    • Be responsible for measuring space plans using architectural software and producing reports with spatial data
    • Act as the key point of contact on behalf of HLW within the Strategy & Discovery phase of work. 
    • Develop project look-ahead schedules, assign tasks to junior team members, and mentor them on the development of deliverables and on nurturing the client relationship.
    • Oversee the development of the overall deliverables and their key messages.
    • Engage in and/or lead a variety of specific project related tasks – with the support of junior team members. Tasks may include workshop facilitation, interviews with clients and their representatives, developing workplace surveys or other analytical exercises, space programming, and liaison with the project designers and architects around subsequent phases of scope.
  • Leadership & Organizational
    • Help ensure project profitability by liaising with project managers to determine labor vs. spend and interpreting that information in managing junior team members on projects.
    • Assist in Strategy & Discovery long-term business planning.
    • Mentor junior team members on all aspects of the Strategy & Discovery business to help ensure their professional and personal development.
  • Business Development and Marketing
    • Assist  and lead in the development of proposals and RFP responses by writing scope and fee for Strategy & Discovery services – either in stand-alone projects or as part of a larger architecture or interiors pitch
    • Participate on project pitch teams.
    • Assist and lead in the development of project pitch content.
    • Cultivate relationships with existing clients as a way to identify new scopes of work or add-services.
    • Attend local and national industry events to network on behalf of Strategy & Discovery and HLW. 
  • Foster Coordination Among All HLW Market Sectors, Studios and Offices
    • Serve as a trusted advisor within HLW who connects the skills and capabilities of each office, studio, or business unit with ongoing project activities and client relationships.
    • Strategically partner with other HLW groups on projects, pursuits, and other initiatives that build business opportunities.

Role Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in architecture, social sciences, research methodology, or a related discipline.
  • 5-10 years of professional experience in architecture, design, workplace strategy, research, or related disciplines.
  • Demonstrated design excellence and consistent high performance.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor junior staff. 
  • Excellent communication, graphic, and verbal presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead client relationships.
  • Desire for growth and diversity in design process.
  • Knowledge of current best practices in design and technologies.
  • Strong marketing and business development skills.
