WXY is an award-winning multi-disciplinary practice specializing in the realization of urban design, planning and architectural solutions in challenging contexts. Focused on innovative approaches to public space, structures and urban issues, the firm’s work engages both site-specific design and planning at multiple scales. The WXY team has a wide range of expertise and handles a great diversity of projects which creates a dynamic office environment where cross-disciplinary team work is essential.

This is a full-time, Urban Designer position. The role requires an ability to handle a range of tasks including project management, engagement with diverse stakeholder groups, and conducting research, analysis and design studies to respond to a client or community’s challenges.  The candidate should possess strong design skills and visual communication skills, and a working knowledge of the NYC zoning code.

A particular focus of the position will be to support master planning and zoning projects and develop design ideas through advancing descriptive text and tables along with high quality representational media including; conceptual diagrams, site planning, and building massing, as well as putting together presentations and marketing proposals.  A strong urban design aptitude and visual communication skills are essential.  The position will require the ability to work independently and as part of an effective team.

  • Work with an interdisciplinary team to support urban planning, stakeholder engagement and community development projects
  • Coordinate and execute all phases of an urban design and master planning project in close collaboration with projects managers and office principals, from proposals to final reports
  • As needed, manage a range of project types, with the expectation of quality and on-time deliverables
  • Prepare written and graphic materials to support planning work, including maps, diagrams, surveys, presentations, web content and project narratives
  • Conduct primary and secondary research, data collection and analysis (particularly geospatial and zoning)
  • Maintain a positive and pro-active attitude, with a clear understanding of the dynamics of community-driven projects
  • Support all phases of design through the production of high quality graphic communication, drawings and presentations
  • Maintain an organized content workflow throughout production, consistent with office procedures and standards
  • Report to project managers and office principals regularly
  • Work directly with a variety of consultants and clients
  • Coordinate and schedule with project team and clients to ensure the timely completion of tasks

Required Skills:

  • Able to undertake the aforementioned responsibilities
  • A good understanding of some of the following: the New York City planning context and procedures; urban design and public realm issues; data sources for demographics, neighborhoods and sites; and an ability to rationally explain, explore and discuss planning issues.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret a range of data and information
  • Ability to synthesize ideas into a narrative
  • Ability to write clearly, and concisely if needed
  • Ability to manage components of projects and communicate with other staff, consultants and clients
  • Good verbal communication skills, particularly with respect to community stakeholders
  • Spreadsheet modelling skills
  • Familiarity with ArcGIS and Adobe Creative Suite (Some familiarity with 3D design, AutoCAD and Rhino are a plus)
  • Able to work under pressure and meet deadlines efficiently

Experience & Qualifications:

  • Able to work in the USA
  • Fluent in English (excellent written and verbal skills)
  • Graphic design, mapping, graphic representation, presentation, and geo-analytical skills
  • Professional degree in Urban Design, Planning or related design fields
  • 4-6 years of professional experience
