Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, an internationally known architectural practice, is seeking an enthusiastic candidate with experience in supporting planning, research, implementation, training and management of design technology (DT) and related information technology (IT) systems, software and work methodologies. Qualified candidates are self-organized, able to multi-task, and passionate about the role of technology in the process of design.

The Design and Information Technology Manager will work directly with the Design Technology Group and the Information Technology Group to lead and coordinate their roles in supporting, implementing, and managing the firm’s DT and IT systems and software. Candidates will need to have expertise in a broad range of DT software including Revit and other 3D rendering, visualization and analysis software. Knowledge of IT systems and software needed to effectively support DT systems and software is also essential.

This is a full-time and firm-wide position that engages with all six of our offices (Wilkes-Barre, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, PA, Seattle, WA, San Francisco, CA and New York City). The position will be based in our Philadelphia office. Periodic visits to the other offices are expected. The position includes competitive salary and benefits. Responsibilities:

Design Technology:

  • Work closely with the Design Technology Group, who have the lead role on Revit and AutoCAD infrastructure including standards, templates, libraries, training, documentation methodologies and maintenance and repair of BIM models as they are developed.
  • Take the lead role in all other design technology software implementation, training, use and maintenance.
  • Serve as a first-tier help desk support for project teams to quickly and efficiently answer staff questions and solve problems about design technology software uses, standards and processes. Provide technical help via Slack, Intranet, email, phone, video conference and by periodic travel to all offices.
  • Engage with project teams to strategize, employ, and maintain effective design technology strategies and workflows.
  • Take the lead role in the development, documentation, and communication of design technology best practices and workflows
  • Be a resource for rendering activities including for competitions and marketing endeavors.  Assist in interoperability between software formats: i.e. SketchUp, Rhino, Revit, 3dsMax, etc.
  • Take a lead role to research, evaluate and make recommendations on the adoption of new technologies, methodologies and solutions as they become available.
  • Daily monitor and respond to questions and comments related to DT/IT posted on the BCJ Slack forums which serves as our main communication tool.
  • Facilitate sharing of design technology knowledge through firm-wide presentations either virtually or in person.
  • Take the lead in regularly scheduled meetings/calls with Design Technology Group
  • Manage purchasing and licensing of Design Technology software

Information Technology:

  • Work closely with the IT Group, which consists of knowledgeable outside IT Consultant firms that serve each office.
  • Co-chair and coordinate the IT Group. Facilitate web/video conference (create agendas & issue minutes) at least monthly.
  • Take a leadership role to research, evaluate and make recommendations on the adoption of new IT systems, software, methodologies and solutions that would more effectively and/or economically support design technology as they become available.
  • Assist the IT Group in solving technology-related problems.
  • Coordinate design technology licenses purchases, subscriptions and updates across all offices.
  • Assist in defining hardware specifications for computer purchases for staff and office use.
  • Coordinate design technology servers & cloud upgrades and maintenance.
  • Develop and maintain an annual firm budget for IT and DT expenditures.
  • Work closely with design staff to identify ways to improve and augment our IT systems to better support our design workflow.  Be an active liaison between the design technology group and information technology group to ensure that information, questions, and needs are being communicated as needed

Qualifications:

  • Expert knowledge of digital design software and systems in a design firm environment including Revit, SketchUp, Rhino, 3dsMax, etc. and plug ins Dynamo and Grasshopper
  • Knowledge of add-ins and plug ins such as Enscape, Unifi, Archvision, PyRevit, Revizto, Sefaira, Iris VR, Ideate Plugins, Camtasia, etc.
  • Expert level high-end rendering experience
  • Knowledge of VR especially in conjunction with Revit and other modeling software.  Knowledge/experience with Augmented Reality a plus
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience related to DT/IT
  • Related experience within an Architectural firm preferred. 
  • Education in Architecture is preferred
  • Excellent leadership and management skills
  • Strong communication, presentation and organizational skills are required
  • Friendly and collaborative approach to dealing with people and troubleshooting
  • Autodesk Certification a plus
  • Architectural License a plus
  • Experience in coding and development of custom components (ie plug-ins for design technology software.  Experience with Python and Iron Python, Dynamo, Grasshopper, Java, C++, etc coding languages a plus.
  • Experience facilitating design and documentation of complex forms a plus
