Michael K Chen Architecture (MKCA) is a growing New York-based architecture firm dedicated to producing innovative and thoughtful built work and applied research. The office’s practice encompasses a wide range of scales, from the design of furniture, to interiors, to buildings, all of which is deeply informed by a commitment to craft at the highest level, and a love of tinkering, of drawing, and of making. We work as a team of talented designers operating from a studio environment in Manhattan. Current projects include high-end residential and commercial interiors, transforming and automated architectural elements, maps, research and writing, small institutional projects, large-scale renovations, and ground-up buildings. The scope of our services frequently straddle the disciplines of architecture, interior design, data visualization, and product and industrial design, in collaboration with fabricators, scientists, engineers, and artists. We work together closely, and team members all participate in the full spectrum of those services and activities.

Job Description:

We are seeking a talented Project Architect to join our team. Project Architects are primarily responsible for 1-2 projects at a time, working closely with the firm principal to develop design from concept through construction; meeting regularly with clients; interfacing with contractors and fabricators; developing representation of the project for presentation and publication including digital renderings, drawings, and physical models; and coordinating the work of consultants, collaborators, and other team members. Project Architects also engage the entire range of the office’s creative workflow through sketching, parametrics, explicit digital modeling, rendering, drafting, and physical model making.

The ideal candidate will not only have the appropriate experience for the position, but will also be well-versed in contemporary architecture and design discourse, and will contribute to the culture and creative growth of the practice.

Qualifications:

  • A professional degree in Architecture. M. Arch, preferred.

  • At least five years of professional architecture experience.

  • Prior experience leading a design team and working with engineering and other consultants.

  • Prior experience seeing built projects from concept through completion.

  • A strong design point of view that is complementary to the practice.

  • Substantial experience producing and organizing a drawing set for construction.

  • Strong digital design skills, and mastery of AutoCAD, Grasshopper, Rhino, V-Ray, and the Adobe Suite. Revit experience, a plus.

  • A demonstrated commitment to making, whether through manual or digital means, including CNC milling, Robotics, 3D printing, or others.
