Smith Maran Architecture + Interiors in Montclair NJ seeks a Project Architect/Project Manager.

We are looking for a highly organized and design-sensitive professional to guide corporate interiors, commercial work and mixed-use development in the tri-state area. As members of a small firm, we each wear more than one hat and you will, too. If you know us, you know we and our clients prize someone who speaks, writes and listens well. If you don’t know us, our office is in the cultural heart of NJ and we serve a broad range of clients with interesting design challenges and high expectations. 

Your Role

  • Work in all phases of project, from attending interviews and assisting on proposal writing to managing project set-up, consultant RFP’s, design, CD’s, bidding, contract prep, CA, punchlist and closeout
  • Sustain positive and productive client contact for the lifecycle of a project
  • Conceptualize, visualize and articulate clear, thoughtful and inspired design solutions
  • Manage project team(s) including architects, interior designers, job captains, graphic designers and engineering consultants
  • Manage project scheduling, meetings, budgets, consultants, contractors, subs and vendors
  • Create and communicate clear and attainable project objectives to project team members
  • Establishing, managing and negotiating project scope and fees -
    participating in monthly billing and job cost analysisEnsure projects conform to contract
  • Ensure projects conform to contract
  • Report to firm Principal


  • BArch or MArch degree from an accredited university
  • Min. 8 years of experience in an architecture firm
  • Min. 5 years on corporate/commercial interiors
  • Min. 5 years on projects that include core and shell
  • Min. 5 years working on projects in NYC
  • Min. 3 years on mixed use projects
  • Able to complete tasks for multiple projects at a time
  • Experience to include:
    • Managing entire project lifecycle, from interview to post-occupancy
    • Leading, managing and mentoring project teams
    • Interviewing and proposal writing
    • Strong communication and relationship management skills to maintain existing client relationships and to build new ones
    • Fiscal awareness and accountability for project time and fees
    • Knowledge of and ability to research and interpret local ordinances, and state and national building codes, requirements and best practices
    • Preparation of RFP’s for, selection of, and coordinating consultant teams for Civil, Structural, MEPFP, etc.
    • Concept development and visualization for large and small scale projects
    • Preparing construction documents and specifications
    • Custom detailing
    • Construction administration
  • Fluent in Autocad, InDesign, Excel
  • Fluency or familiarity with PhotoShop and SketchUp
  • Adaptive Re-use/Historic Preservation a significant plus
  • LEED Accreditation a significant plus
  • Licensed Architect (min. on track for licensing)   

The ideal candidate will be a team player with a high-end, modern sensibility, will possess passion for and commitment to architecture and design, and will have experience with and interest in both the big and small, from concept to close out
