Are You Ready for a Real Change in Architecture?

Do you know in your gut that the present Architectural Design and Construction Model is Broken?  This posting might be tailor-made for you.  Read on!

When we say broken, we mean this:  All involved parties have competing ends.  Architects design buildings for Owner’s, only to realize that the dollars cannot support the design, Contractors cut on the design to save money.  In this fractured environment, costs go up and quality goes down.  Surely, there’s a better way?

We say there is!  We say through technology and creative hardworking individuals – individuals like you perhaps! - that Design and Construction should not be two things but One.  That’s right, an integration whereby the promise of the original Design is actually realized in the finished built product.  We believe in good design, excellent design, all the way through the process.  What’s our secret sauce?

We, as a group of Architects, have leveraged our skills, technology, and a factory, to re-realize the dream, of the “Master-Builder” of old.  That’s right, we build what we design.  Then we assemble our buildings in the field, across the country.  And we are growing!  With each project, we are improving our pipeline, improving our process – that is, removing waste, innovating, making the future better.  Can the present Delivery Model say that?

Read the following additional Detail from our website:

  • Current Industry State:

Todays’ Buildings are the result of traditional design and construction thinking that has evolved little in a century. This produces an expensive, low-performance building slowly. BLOX is changing that with Design Manufacture Construct (DMC), an open-source method to design buildings with twice the quality of traditional buildings, assemble them twice as fast as traditional construction, and produce them for half the cost — the 2x2x2 Initiative.

  • Future State:  DMC is the Key

DESIGN:  Everything starts with Design - it is the foundation of DMC and it’s BLOX’s mother tongue. BLOX was created by the architects at GA Studio, who for fifty years, have designed elegant solutions to complex problems. Today, BLOX and the architecture firm that invented them, work side-by-side in the factory designing beautiful buildings and manufacturing the solutions that make them real.

MANUFACTURE:  Using manufacturing productivity to improve quality, speed and cost of buildings is an obvious strategy – it is a hard one to implement.  From a simple start in our friend’s garage in 2009, BLOX has grown up; today our plant in Birmingham has over a million square feet of production space under crane and an onsite intermodal that connects us to every rail, truck and port in North America. Our capacity allows us to grow with our clients and our proximity to the adjacent automotive manufacturing infrastructure serving Honda, Mercedes and Hyundai provides a mature skilled workforce. Today BLOX runs twelve manufacturing lines and produces the BLOX System of nested parts used to make better buildings faster.

CONSTRUCT:  DMC takes a critical mass of a building and manufactures it in a factory – the result is a less congested jobsite and with that, an opportunity to improve traditional workflows.  A BLOX jobsite works to be an extension of our manufacturing flow – our field work is organized around standard work packages, standard containerized tools and flat-packed kit-of-parts. A BLOX construction team is a cross-functional team of architects, manufacturers and tradesmen trained to operate like a Formula One pit crew.
