The University of Minnesota’s School of Architecture seeks to hire one full-time (100% or 75% time) or two part-time (50% time), non-tenure track, nine-month Professor-in-Practice faculty position(s) with a contract term of three years.

The successful candidate(s) will be interested in reimagining where the profession and construction industry are going and how architectural education needs to change accordingly. The Professor(s)-in-Practice may contribute to any or all programs in the School of Architecture, including, but not limited to, the M. Arch Program, which is our accredited, professional degree, the MS Research Practice degree, and our undergraduate degrees, and to make creative contributions to understanding the relationship between academic research and the practice community through exploring new models of both. This builds on the School of Architecture’s strategic plan, which aims to educate future architects and to prepare students for leadership in the rapidly changing field of architecture. We value inquisitive, curious, and adaptable thinkers; those who seek to engage the fundamental disciplinary provisions of architectural practice while also challenging its boundaries. At UMN, we emphasize a design education grounded in three fundamental practices: materials and media literacy, environmental stewardship, and systemic thinking. Supporting these practices are three values: 1. inquiry, or holistic and critical thinking, 2. diversity, equity, and engagement, and 3. the historical, theoretical, and cultural context of architectural meaning.

We seek an experienced practitioner who can bring the rigors, economies, and innovations of practice, along with a critical, historically- and theoretically-informed eye to the design studio. We seek an individual who is passionate about the technical dimensions of architecture, from both a disciplinary perspective and a conceptual/poetic dimension. The ideal candidate will have significant experience with a critically recognized architectural firm. Preference will be given to applicants who have earned licensure in architecture in the United States.

The candidate should be interested in shaping, in collaboration with the professional community and other architecture faculty, the future of architectural education. We seek a contributor to research in architectural design pedagogy (the discipline of teaching architectural design as a specific and particular mode of inquiry in itself). We are open to dynamic and forward-thinking contributions in this regard, and welcome the integration of new educational approaches. We anticipate that the Professor-in-Practice will teach and coordinate design studios across our undergraduate and graduate programs. This professor will also instruct required and elective courses in practice, building technology, theory, and/or visual representation or other areas as related to the candidate’s expertise.

The Professor-in-Practice will also bring a robust and critical research agenda related to architectural practice. Potential research areas include emerging/advanced representation, advanced building technologies, interdisciplinary practice, or other issues crucial to the practice of architecture. This is a 9-month academic year, contract (non-tenure-track) faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor.  Specific percent time may be negotiated from 50%-100%-time.  50%-time appointments carry limited benefits. The anticipated start date is August 27, 2018. Appointment term is three years. The position(s) may be renewable upon expiration of the initial three-year term; however, there is no guarantee of renewal and currently no plan for renewal.


  • Instruct classes, including design studios, as determined by the Head for a typical load of 3 courses during the academic year (Sept – May), at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Develop and refine the undergraduate and graduate curriculum in collaboration with other architecture faculty.
  • Advise students from a variety of cultures and communities and contribute to recruitment and retention strategies.
  • Participate in the system of shared governance through service at the program, school, college and university levels.
  • Develop a clear research agenda, leading to publications and/or awards.
  • Work collaboratively with other disciplines in the College and within the University.
  • Engage in professional practice organizations and activities in the community.
  • Support the land-grant mission by conducting community outreach where appropriate.



  • Bachelor or Master of Architecture degree.
  • Architectural teaching experience, with an awareness of diverse backgrounds, viewpoints, and communication styles.
  • Effective written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Substantial (minimum 7 years) and recognized experience in architectural practice, demonstrated through awards for and publications of built work.


  • A record of effective and innovative teaching, including architectural design studio.
  • Experience working collaboratively with others, including allied disciplines and professions.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with evidence of successful and innovative professional practice and research, as exemplified by portfolio, awards, etc.
  • Evidence of attention to cultural diversity in teaching, scholarship, and/or professional practice and the demonstrated ability to support the University’s commitment to equity and inclusion.
  • Preference may be given to applicants who have earned licensure in architecture in the United States.
