The School of Architecture at the University of Minnesota invites applications for a tenure track position in resilient and regenerative design. This is a full-time, tenure track appointment, to begin in the fall semester 2018.

This position acknowledges that communities and structures are facing natural and human-made challenges at ever-increasing levels and that much of the work and theory of sustainable architecture has been incremental fine-tuning, failing to inspire design and innovation. The natural, social, and technological worlds we inhabit have real limits and perceptible fragility. The natural systems that humanity has lived within have been altered beyond return to a “pristine” state, but hopefully not beyond functional restoration. What is a new role for design in this context? How do architects consider an integral design process merging the designed world or “technosphere” with the life support system, or “ecosphere,” of the planet? How does architecture meet human needs, create delight, and inspire while enhancing the potential of natural and social systems? Can buildings be analogues for living systems? Resilient and regenerative approaches to design represent imperative knowledge for every graduating architecture student. In a context of climate change, population growth, increased frequency of natural disasters, and a profession that must grow more inclusive and diverse, both in terms of its internal composition and the clients it serves, students must know how to design strategically to produce architecture that regenerates itself, responds to and participates in its surroundings, and actively improves socio-ecological systems. The University of Minnesota School of Architecture is home to one of the nation's first graduate programs in sustainable design. Positioned as a leader in resilience and regenerative design innovation, the school seeks a tenure-track faculty member who can serve in the capacity of the program's director and lead its evolution, perhaps even its wholesale redesign, and critical development in years to come.

This tenure-track faculty member will have qualifications for teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, bringing capacity for exceptional design studio instruction. The successful candidate will participate in reformulation of the MS in Sustainable Design program, which echoes the belief that issues of resilient and regenerative approaches to architecture cannot be separated from issues of ecological context, inclusion and diversity, and critical design. The ideal candidate will have a competency in the technical and empirical aspects of architecture as it relates to resilient and regenerative design, and socio-cultural issues in architecture, while also having the ability to view holistically the capacity for these issues to drive conceptual design decisions. 

The ideal candidate will develop a research agenda related to resilient/regenerative design and will work in close collaboration with the College of Design's Center for Sustainable Building Research, among the leading centers of its kind in the country. The successful candidate will reach across disciplines within the College of Design and initiate trans-disciplinary collaboration across the University to develop interdisciplinary research approaches with other programs and schools to embrace a wide range of disciplines such as Landscape Architecture, Interior Design, Urban Planning, Natural Resource Sciences, Business and Engineering. This is a 100%-time, 9-month academic year, tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor.  The anticipated start date is August 27, 2018. Compensation is commensurate with qualifications and experience.


  • Instruct sustainability, resilience and regenerative classes, including design studios, as determined by the Head for a typical load of 3 courses during the academic year (Sept – May), at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Serve as Director of the MS in Sustainable Design, collaboratively rethinking and potentially renaming it, for an initial term of two years, with the potential to renew.
  • Develop and refine the undergraduate and graduate curriculum in collaboration with other architecture faculty.
  • Advise students and contribute to recruitment and retention strategies.
  • Participate in the system of shared governance through service at the program, school, college and university levels.
  • Conduct research in the areas of sustainability, resilience and regeneration, broadly defined to potentially include issues around inclusion and diversity in the discipline; obtain external funding and develop a strong record of publication or dissemination; integrate research into teaching.
  • Initiate and participate in trans-disciplinary collaboration within the college and across the University to develop interdisciplinary research approaches with other programs and schools to embrace a wide range of disciplines.
  • Engage in professional practice organizations and activities in the community.
  • Support the university’s land-grant mission by conducting community engaged practice, teaching and research.
  • Engage and employ a wide range of tools and metrics to measure/research real-world data (methods of analysis, site investigation, microclimatic assessments, simulation tools, modeling, novel construction methods, scenario planning, etc.).



  • Master of Architecture degree, minimum.
  • Architectural teaching experience, including architectural design studio, with an awareness of diverse backgrounds, viewpoints, and communications styles, and with demonstrated effectiveness.
  • Scholarship and/or professional experience in design, with demonstrated expertise in resilient and regenerative design.
  • Promise of significant achievement in the field through scholarship, professional practice, or a combination thereof.
  • Effective written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.


  • Substantial experience in architectural practice demonstrated through awards for and publications of built work.
  • Earned doctorate in architecture or related field.
  • Experience working collaboratively with others including allied disciplines and professions.
  • Capacity to garner external research funding.
  • A record of innovative architecture or design teaching.
  • Experience teaching courses in resilient and regenerative design, broadly defined.
  • Evidence of attention to cultural diversity in teaching, scholarship, and/or professional practice and the demonstrated ability to support the University’s commitment to equity and inclusion.
