We are exclusively conducting an executive search for a Director level Architect, that will be the representative for a nationally recognized design firm’s NY and Northeast Higher Ed presence and expansion.

This position will lead efforts in building a robust institutional presence on the East Coast. This position carries a strong expectation for leadership both within the studio and the broader community of clients and peers. The proper candidate will have a strong portfolio of built projects reflecting a sustained and successful career in the northeastern U.S. higher education market, as well as strong existing relationships with campus leaders. Experience with SUNY and/or DASNY projects, or projects specifically located in the New York Metro Region, is a plus. As our client seeks to build a studio with diverse project types, experience with workplace or housing projects is also an advantage. The ideal candidate has been at an established firm with a reputation for high-quality, higher education projects for a period of at least 10 years.


- Ten or more years of experience within higher education niche

- Proven management and business development skills in a client-facing role

- Registered Architect in NY State

- Master of Architecture degree preferred

- LEED Accreditation preferred

- Strong interpersonal communication skills

- Leadership within professional associations (e.g. Society for College and University   Planning, the Urban Land Institute) preferred  

- Ability to cultivate upstream leads, manage ongoing BD efforts, and lead RFP/Q responses, working in concert with marketing and other firm leaders

You will be expected to attend relevant industry events (such as Society for College and University Planning – SCUP – regional and national conferences) as a representative of our client. You will also meet independently with campus architects and planners to develop a strategic understanding of future opportunities at their respective institutions. This position will work closely with the marketing department to develop and maintain a list of institutional targets, track forthcoming RFPs and opportunities, and build appropriate consultant teams. These business development responsibilities are expected to comprise 40-70% of the position while firm presence is being established.

The remaining 30-60% of the position will consist of hands-on management of projects and project teams. These tasks will include managing project schedules, budgets, fees, staffing, and tracking overall project status for a range of Institutional and Higher Education Projects.



This is a permanent, full time position with enormous growth potential. Full benefits, vacation, base salary in $150k range with aggressive bonus potential.
