About the Office:

Established in 1898, the Public Design Commission reviews architecture, landscape architecture, and works of art on City-owned property. Projects include construction or restoration of structures, such as libraries, fire stations, and bridges; creation or renovation of parks, playgrounds, and plazas; installation of lighting and other streetscape elements; and the design, installation, and conservation of artwork. The Commission holds monthly hearings to review projects, which are primarily submitted by City agencies. There are 11 Commissioners, who serve pro bono, and five full-time staff members. The Commission also acts as caretaker and curator of the City's public art collection and maintains an extensive archive documenting the history of New York City's public works, which is frequently used by historians, students, and other City agencies. The Commission is an advocate for excellence and innovation in the public realm, ensuring the viability and quality of public programs and services throughout the city for years to come.

About the Role:

The principal responsibilities of the Urban Designer are as follows:

  • Coordinate with other City agency representatives on City, interagency and PDC initiatives, design projects, capital project review and management, and reporting.
  • Develop and contribute to a working knowledge and implementation of the PDC’s, and other City agencies’ design and construction guidelines, processes, and initiatives.
  • Plan, organize and conduct design studies and reviews, research data, analyze contexts and conditions, prepare technical and illustrative drawings, digital models and presentation materials, and written reports for city design guidelines and policies.
  • Promote and develop strategies for improved excellence and quality of design in the City.
  • Perform other related tasks and projects including special events and public engagement.


  • New York City Resident (required within 90 days of appointment)
  • Graduate from an accredited university with a graduate degree, preferably in architecture, landscape architecture, or urban design
  • Five years of experience in a related field preferred; graduate work leading to an advanced degree in urban design, architecture, landscape architecture, or urban planning is preferred and may be substituted for up to two years of experience
  • Familiarity with architectural plans and details and experience with urban design and capital projects for public architecture, landscape architecture, and art
  • Demonstrated ability to self-manage, as well as superior project management skills, including the ability to complete tasks in a timely fashion with minimal supervision
  • Excellent written, verbal, and graphic communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Graphic design and illustration experience, using Adobe Creative Suite
  • Experience with GIS and database and/or CAD software, photography, and social media
