We are seeking a passionate and creative Development Manager, who will strategize, manage and execute the organization’s annual fundraising strategy, leading the team on a temporary basis (September 2017, through early 2018), with the potential to permanently join the team. The Development Manager will have proven expertise and success in all major areas of fundraising across government, corporation, individual and foundation sources, with particular focus in the area of corporate giving and fundraising events. The position will work closely with both staff and Board to strengthen and expand programmatic and general operating support for the organization.


  • Overseeing the development team in stewarding the organization’s giving portfolios, executing the annual fundraising plan, and strategizing go-forward fundraising strategies in the areas of individual, government, corporate and foundation giving, with a particular focus on growing the organization’s corporate giving portfolio

  • Special and fundraising event development, management and execution, most immediately for the organization’s annual Spring Party in 2018

  • Work directly with event co-chairs and Van Alen’s Board, Committees and Councils on fundraising, strategically leveraging relationships and broader networks to grow funding for the organization

  • Support, prepare and strategically deploy the Executive Director with key potential donors from all constituencies

  • Identify, research, build and maintain relationships with funding prospects

  • Produce, submit, track and report on funding requests and grant proposals

  • Gather and prepare materials to accompany grant and sponsorship requests (financial data, bios, required forms, budgets, budget narratives, etc.)

  • Manage pre- and post-award relationships and grant and sponsorship compliance, including letters of inquiry, contracts, progress reports, final reports and other correspondence

  • Work with program managers to coordinate timelines for project funding requests

  • Prepare financial projections and revenue reports

  • Direct and manage external consultants as needed

  • Ensure database maintenance protocol

  • Develop and execute annual fundraising campaigns

  • Efficiently track all fundraising communications and deploy effective follow up strategies


  • Proven track record in fundraising five and six-figure gifts, preferably at a cultural organization

  • Specialist expertise in corporate giving and special events

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with outstanding interpersonal skills

  • Bachelor's degree

  • 5-7 years of fundraising or development experience  

  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects and simultaneous deadlines

  • Well-networked within local, national, and international individual, foundation, government and corporate sources

  • Strong interest and/or background in architecture, cities, or a related field
