Space Exploration is an award-winning, integrated architecture and interior design practice specializing in homes, retail boutiques and hospitality venues, with a focus on integrating historical elements with complementary modern design. Founded in 2008 by principal Kevin Greenberg, Space Exploration first garnered attention for the design of Maryam Nassir Zadeh, a fashion and lifestyle boutique on Manhattan's Lower East Side. Space Exploration has gone on to design a number of notable restaurants in New York and New Jersey, including Karasu, Mathew's, Walter's and Glasserie, along with many private residences in Manhattan, Brooklyn, The Hamptons, Los Angeles and Miami Beach.

Space Exploration's work has been featured in international online and print publications including Architectural Digest, Remodelista, Corriere della Sera, PIN-UP, GQ, The New York Times, Design Milk, Architizer, and many others.

Space Exploration only accepts projects that have rich design potential. The lead architect's role is critical to the firm, since the lead architect's responsibilities are second only to the principal's when it comes to conceiving of and shaping the design of a project from start to finish, from the broad strokes to the critical details that ultimately animate the project and lend it its character.

Space Exploration is currently seeking a creative and talented lead architect to join our growing practice, based in Brooklyn, NY. Candidates should have a strong interest in interiors and be enthusiastic about teamwork, the nuances of project management and possess a thoughtful, courteous and professional disposition towards clients.

The lead architect will work collaboratively with the principal, developing projects through all phases of design and construction.

Candidates should possess the following:

  • A professional architecture degree: B.Arch or higher
  • At least four years of design and construction experience at a design-oriented firm
  • Excellent verbal and writing skills in English
  • Proficiency in AutoCad, Rhinoceros or SketchUp, and Adobe Creative Suite
  • Fluency or at least familiarity with the basics of New York City building code and the associated permitting process, including familiarity with the Landmarks Preservation Commission and its processes.
  • The candidate should be able to conceive and execute a 100% CD set from scratch: in addition to being able to frame the set and lay out the required sheets, he or she should be comfortable producing drawings for all design phases, from concept design through construction documents, with thorough technical detailing and notation
  •  The candidate should be comfortable coordinating and liaising with all required consultants: engineers, surveyors, expeditor, architect of record, fine finishers, fabricators and specialty tradespeople
  • The candidate should possess a realistic understanding of typical project costs, and should be able to produce a realistic, detailed project timeline
  • The candidate should feel comfortable managing a team of 2-3 intermediate and junior designers, and should be able to efficiently delegate tasks to his or her team, as well as managing the team's deliverables for presentation to the principal and ultimately to the client.
  • The lead architect operates more or less independently from the principal, reporting to the principal regularly but actively managing the project from day to day with minimal oversight.
  • If the principal has other obligations, the candidate should feel comfortable corresponding with and meeting with the client directly
  • He or she should be well organized, and should possess an aptitude for necessary administrative tasks, time-tracking, and billing.
  • The lead architect will be responsible for monitoring the hourly expenditures of his or her team to make sure they remain in line with the project's fee cap and fee structure.
