HSA Theater Renovation.

The final project of both the second semester as well as our first year was to create a new structure on the site of the Harlem School of the Arts Theater. We were given a program then through analysis of site and exploration of a concept we chose based on our visitation to the site. This project was a culmination of the years work. Taking lessons and experiences from both semesters we created our new HSA theaters.

Following the visit to the Harlem School of the Arts,  what stood out to me most in my photomontages was the extreme change of environment from the school’s exterior to the theater. It was a instant and visually harsh transformation.  From this observation, I chose to base my reimagining of the theater on the concept of fading and transitioning. Because my concept was primarily about creating that transitional zone, the theater itself was set more as a destination, and most of the focus was on the lobby and pathways to and from the theater. The structure was intended to have the inhabitants fade in and out of reality by closing out views of the outside environment and inspiring the feeling of spaces within spaces.
