Gemdale Plaza

Sited at the main eastern entry to Beijing’s Central Business District, this mixed-use office and retail complex looks to both the city’s rich history and its promising future. The architectural design and innovative structural system are integral expressions of this duality.

The complex is composed of two glass-enclosed towers: one 160 meters and the other 100 meters tall. The north and west facades of both towers draw on Beijing’s heritage; the varied yet formal grid of the frame references the intricate detailing of the old city walls.

Built from structural concrete, the frame supports the translucent glass volume that greets travelers entering the Central Business District from the west. The folded planes forming the south and east elevations are glazed to reflect sunlight over the course of the day, adding to the building’s dynamic quality.

The towers are suspended over a four-story podium, which houses conference and exhibition space.
