Karst was a convention center campus proposal for Lingang City, a satellite of Shanghai, based on the idea of the Lingang New City master plan: the ripple.
A water drop spurs layers of ripples that wash over its shoreline, creating dynamic forms through their continuous eroding of the earth. The sculptural character of the shoreline rocks is embodied by buildings beneath a flowing skybridge, connecting the retail village to other parts of the complex. The existing imagery created an ideal setting for an aggressive surface language experiment in overlaying occupant experience with abstract formal gestures.
I was tasked with developing a formal language for the overall campus and developing the 3D assets for the retail component, for which I was given full control--an honor considering I had just recently graduated. Having so much freedom was something I had not anticipated in a junior role.
Unfortunately, the project was shelved following the first round of entries.
