This winning competition entry was a response to a Silver Lake Neighborhood Council and City of Los Angeles sponsored search for proposals for a public plaza at the intersections of Sunset and Santa Monica Blvd. in Los Angeles California. Collaborating with three other architecture colleagues under the name ALLTHATISSOLID, our proposal was first jury selected and then community chosen as the winning entry from among sixty other submissions and is slated to begin construction in late summer of 2012 with a budget of $100,000.
The scheme, entitled BLOOMRS, envisions a Los Angeles geography that no longer prioritizes the automobile and its constriction of people friendly spaces. Instead, we attempt to leverage territories of residual sites into public spaces of leisure, interaction, and cultural visibility. Our proposal expands the small site footprint by lifting the ground plane at two ends, resulting in a dynamic hyperboloid of double-layered green space. This gesture maximizes surface area so that garden, neighbors, and bicycles can co-mingle in a thickened environment that enriches the sidewalk culture of Silver Lake’s bustling walking community.
