The Banner Building - Landmark Building 1900

In 2007, Scott Henson Architect was hired to conduct detailed facade inspections, mechanical probes, graphic and photographic documentation, historical research and materials analysis to devise a comprehensive restoration master plan for the cast iron and sheet metal facade of the Banner Building at 648 Broadway.
The building’s original decorative cast iron elements were severely deteriorated and many components had to be recast using details extracted from surrounding features. New structural supports were designed to secure both the restored and the newly cast elements. Each section of sheet metal was carefully documented, keyed, and dismantled. In areas too deteriorated for repair, new sections were locally fabricated using custom molds, then intricately soldered into place with new structural connections.
The original wood windows were assessed to be in a state of deterioration that warranted their full replacement. To enhance the envelope’s energy performance, the new windows were fabricated with energy efficient double pane insulated glass with wood frames to match the original type, function, and
historic details.
The restoration of the Banner Building has received diverse awards: Preservation Commendation, 2013 Victorian Society in America Preservation Awards; Preservation Award, 2012 Lucy G. Moses Preservation Awards; Citation for Design Award on Historic Preservation, 2011 AIA New York State Design Awards; Merit Award for Historic Preservation, 2011 AIA Tri-State Design Awards.
