Bauhaus Museum Dessau

The studio used the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation Museum Competition 2015 brief as a basis for the program and site but then built upon it by questioning what we felt made a great contemporary urban museum. The project site is in the City Park which is directly in the center of Dessau. This proposal seeks to integrate itself within the city and park landscape by respecting existing qualities and uses while still becoming a contemporary cultural focus for Dessau.

This museum will provide a much needed opportunity to showcase the collection of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation to the public. Along with this, additional facilities have been incorporated to allow the museum to serve as a leader in Bauhaus artifact restoration. The ground floor facilities are public and a passage connects the park and the market so as to add to the quality of the park and neighboring street.

The form and organization of the building were developed in response to in-depth study of Bauhaus design as well as response to context, light, and program. Sculptural central circulation elements bring visitors directly from the ground floor to the top level Bauhaus galleries. The Bauhaus collection gallery spaces alternate between top-lit pods to showcase objects and rectangular light controlled boxes to display sensitive drawings. Physical daylight models were built through the process to study and optimize the lighting in the galleries. Between each gallery space are breaks with views out to the park or the city where visitors can reconnect to the context and interact with more hands-on displays like catalogs and books to go further in depth on the exhibit topics. Visitors then experience the flexible gallery space of rotating exhibits on the floor below and are given aW glimpse into the interworking of the museum through a window into the collection storage. This proposal for a Bauhaus Museum in Dessau honors the history of the foundations of contemporary design as well as strengthens the urban fabric of the city of Dessau.
