Bldg. 168 Minuteman Bowling Center Deck (In-House built project) DFMWR Project Support

As part of Borinquen Week celebration preparation I was requested to develop the design, cost estimate, purchase of materials and construction project management for an In-house Bldg. 168 Minuteman Bowling Center Deck project applying professional knowledge of architectural design principles and techniques. DFMWR had a schematic sketch for the proposal but the design wasn’t appropriate for construction; neither was suitable for site conditions.

For this particular project I had to re-design the deck project from scratch. I performed an architectural documentation and prepared an as-built drawing to clarify existing site & building context. Three floor plan layouts were designed to provide multiple solutions to the new structure. At the end, the less expensive layout was selected for construction. An advanced use of skills in the utilization of computer-aided design and drafting (Auto CAD (CADD)) system and design industry computer software were crucial to fully develop the proposed and built design. Construction documents included detailed floor plans, elevations, sections and structural wood, steel and foundation construction details. I prepared a materials list which I used as a base to provide an Independent Government Estimate to purchase all required materials. Maintained constant communication with material suppliers, requested quotes and provided materials purchase orders support. Served as technical leader and construction work laborer thru the construction period of time (1 month approximately). On this project I explored, evaluated, and incorporated architectural and engineering features into the design of aesthetic, cost-effective, durable structure to support recreational activities. Work involved regular and recurring exposure to risks and discomforts, such as dust, strong order or fumes from fuels, chemicals, or engine exhaust; high level of noises and vibration, dust, grease, electrical hazards, uncovered moving parts of machinery, moving machinery; or outdoor conditions involving moderate exposure to rain and hot weather, long periods of standing, walking over rough, uneven, rocky, or slippery surfaces; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, climbing or similar activities; recurring lifting of light to moderately heavy items weighing less than 50 pounds, such as testing or measuring equipment; and daily presence in construction site. Also, required me to stay alert continually and to take special safety precautions including wearing special protective items of clothing. Thanks to the appropriate design features considered for this project and the good quality of construction the structure was not affected by Hurricane Maria.
