Biotrial, a global leader in contract research, hired Francis Cauffman to design its North American Headquarters in Newark, New Jersey. This is the fifth office for the company, which is based in Rennes, France. Biotrial also has offices in Paris, London, and Montreal. 

The five-story building offers a wide variety of laboratory, pharmacy, and clinical facilities, as well as corporate office space. In addition, it includes amenities such as a café, library, lounge and gardens. 

The building is the first phase of Francis Cauffman’s master plan for a full city block in Newark that both engages the site’s diverse surroundings and sets a precedent for future city development. The building features an opaque solid frame and front and the other three facades feature transparent glass. The shape of the building is 50 feet wide and 200 feet long in order to maximize natural daylight in the interior spaces.
